cyberghostface: (Spidey & MJ)
[personal profile] cyberghostface posting in [community profile] scans_daily

So out of all of the supporting cast who gets spider-powers, guess who is the one who becomes the biggest hero with their new abilities? Is it...Aunt May? Of course not, it's CARLIE COOPER!!!!111!!!

First six pages are from #667, final three are from #668.

Wow, is this the fifth time that Mary Jane shills Carlie for the audience?

Carlie is just not a well thought out character, I hate to say it I wish someone would break them up so she could just marry God already and bring out the new Utopia based on herself because she always perfect.

Really, Pete. You kissed another girl infront of MJ in what is considered to be your "bad" movie so you did it for realsies in the comic?
Oh, if it turns out MJ is the woman behind this, I will hate Spider-Man again...

Hasn't anyone posted that issue with that Not- Gwen Stacy clone with that disease that made her into Gwen Stacy?

To be fair, there's nothing that shows that he actually knew he was kissing Carlie in front of MJ.

A few points.

1: Didn't solicits already reveal this arc ends when MJ gets spider-powers and teams up with Peter to kick bad guy ass?

2: Yeah, I think Carlie is dragging this title down so much. They're trying too hard.

3: There will be a Carlie backlash eventually in series. I haven't seen a character received so poorly since Bendis put The Sentry into The Avengers. And actually, she's been received far worse than The Sentry because at least he had the original Paul Jenkins mini to fall back on.

I don't get why Slott is so invested in Carlie Cooper. It's like Quesada threatened to fire him if he didn't.

I'd actually read that comic so long as it ends with MJ realizing she was only having an affair with Carlie because she misses Peter and FOR FUCKS SAKE JUST PUT THEM BACK TOGETHER AGAIN

I usually really like Humberto Ramos' art, but jeez, it's just weird in these issues. O_o Especially those panels where Carlie is bending over at a weird spine-snapping angle!

Also, argh. Is Carlie the second coming of Christ or something? Why is absolutely everyone in the world shilling her like crazy? I could understand "Yeah, she's okay, we get along," but everybody appears to be "ZOMG SHE'S THE GREATEST EVER EVER EVER SHE'S SO WONDERFUL YAY OMG".

I prefer the idea of her being Spidey's Commissioner Gordon figure, honestly. Just a police contact. No special powers or Jesus-Prestige. Just a common, clever cop who happens to be buddies with Spidey.

Ramos's art here is...well, it's not working for me, let's just leave it at that.

You know, I'm becoming ever more convinced that MJ is harboring a growing crush on Carlie. All the glowing compliments, calling her "tiger"...I'm just saying.

I'm probably alone in thinking this, but Carlie's sheer enthusiasm over having superpowers is kind of...cute. I mean, who wouldn't react the same way? But, like so many things Carlie-related, the good parts are drastically outweighed by the lack of genuine character development, the forced endorsements, and the jarring feeling that the writers are somewhere going, "LOVE HER. LOVE HER. WHY WON'T YOU LOVE HER?!"

Poor "character." She never stood a chance.

I would probably buy a comic called "The Amazing Carlie-man." or something.

Oh, but you forgot the best part. On top of all of this "awesomeness" she displays in these scans, Carlie also happens to figure out that Jackal is the one behind the infestation of spider-powers before anyone else, Peter even thinking to himself: "Idiot! Of course it's Miles Warren! Why didn't I see THAT?! Genetic tampering! Spider/Human DNA! It all fits! Carlie, why do you have to be so good at this?!"

Well, gee Peter, maybe the reason you didn't think it was the Jackal was because, as far as everyone knew, the Jackal was dead--including you, considering how you actually saw him die during the Clone Saga (Okay, yeah I know this is comics and no one really stays dead, but even so). So really, no one should have been able to figure it out--expect maybe your Mary Sue of a girlfriend, apparently. :-D

What bothers me..

I really couldn't care less about Carlie or the rampant Carlie hatred around these parts. I just feel kind of indifferent towards her. Black Cat was the Spiderman girl that I liked. So I don't have any resentment towards her for replacing MJ, but I don't really see anything all that distinctive about Carlie either. (If they wanted Spidey to hook up with a cop, maybe they shouldn't have killed off Jean DeWolf! LOL!)

But what is bugging me in this is how the hell does the Jackel know who Spiderman is? Given the rules of the mind wipe there, aren't people supposed to be unaware of his identity unless he chooses to reveal it to them currently?

Unless of course, they're gonna say that the reason Jackal was unaffected was BECAUSE he was dead at the time. And thus must have pulled a Kraven and had a full scale resurrection, and came back unaffected because he was down in hell or something..

(That situation of a dead person being unaffected by something that's happened to everybody else in their absence actually reminds me of something, but I can't for the life of me think what it is just now...)

I hope they try to explain this, because right now it's the mother of all plot holes in this story..

Ah hah!

So I'm just coughing up all my blood now. It's not even related to my laringitis/flu combo, it's simply my undying hate for Carlie Cooper. I'd blame my Red Lanter Ring, but it simply hasn't found me yet.

So Spider-Man gets this new girlfriend, right, but she's like, super-awesome, and she's really pretty except she wears glasses 'cos she's geeky but she's still pretty, and she's a cop, but she's like a really cool science-y cop, right, so it's just like Spider-Man, and she likes rollerblading because I like rollerblading but she's kinda clumsy so people sometimes make fun of her but she ignores it and everyone likes her really, even Spider-Man's old girlfriend, and then one day everyone gets spider-powers, but she's the best with the spider-powers, and everyone's like "Wow, you're awesome with spider-powers!", and Spider-Man is like "Now I can finally be with someone like me", and they're all happy together, and she's called Carlie because my daughter's name is Carlie.

I'm just so...apathetic, now. This isn't bad in the sense of being poorly written, so much as it just seems very...I dunno. I just don't like it. They certainly are going way out of their way to sell Carlie as this paragon character, which I suppose wouldn't be such a problem if they didn't spend so much time rubbing MJ in the reader's face. I mean, it's been a couple of years now, Marvel....why don't you just do to MJ what has been done to tons of Peter Parker's former girlfriends and love interests: just drop her out of the title and stop talking about her.

On the other hand, Spiderman #666 was the top-selling comic in July with around 135,000 copies...the only title to cross into six-figures. So I guess they're winning in a moribund market. Obviously, the new DC numbers will feature a sizable jump for September, so who knows? Marvel seems to be getting the result they want.

They're never going to drop MJ for more than a year or two, not when she's one of the Spidey-Verse's longest-established and more importantly, most popular characters.

So wait, I thought Quesada wanted the Spider-marriage gone because he liked footloose, fancy-free Peter. But he has a serious girlfriend? Doesn't that seem kind of counter to the original idea?

Eh, it's not like I read the book anyway, just wondering.

Is it wrong that I won't buy a Spider-Man comic until someone else takes over Marvel from Quesada and has this character killed off in a really horrible fashion?

Every time I read a post about Carlie and how hard they try to sell her I think of how WWF/E would do the same exact thing.

Vince McMahon would find some huge talentless slug that no one but him cared about that he would constantly try to make look good.

And the audience would change the channel or go take a leak whenever said wrestler was in the ring.

Kind of like how I don't buy Spider-Man comics.
