So out of all of the supporting cast who gets spider-powers, guess who is the one who becomes the biggest hero with their new abilities? Is it...Aunt May? Of course not, it's CARLIE COOPER!!!!111!!!
First six pages are from #667, final three are from #668.

Wow, is this the fifth time that Mary Jane shills Carlie for the audience?

Hasn't anyone posted that issue with that Not- Gwen Stacy clone with that disease that made her into Gwen Stacy?

2: Yeah, I think Carlie is dragging this title down so much. They're trying too hard.
3: There will be a Carlie backlash eventually in series. I haven't seen a character received so poorly since Bendis put The Sentry into The Avengers. And actually, she's been received far worse than The Sentry because at least he had the original Paul Jenkins mini to fall back on.

Date: 2011-09-08 02:35 am (UTC)The writers at this point have just responded to fan criticism with more salt in the wound (when they're not outright insulting the fans online); I.E. the numerous jabs at the fans of the Spider-marriage after OMD. The more people bash Carlie, the more she will be rubbed in our faces.
The only way Carlie will be written out at this point is when there's a new "brain trust" on the title.

Date: 2011-09-08 03:09 am (UTC)Also, argh. Is Carlie the second coming of Christ or something? Why is absolutely everyone in the world shilling her like crazy? I could understand "Yeah, she's okay, we get along," but everybody appears to be "ZOMG SHE'S THE GREATEST EVER EVER EVER SHE'S SO WONDERFUL YAY OMG".
I prefer the idea of her being Spidey's Commissioner Gordon figure, honestly. Just a police contact. No special powers or Jesus-Prestige. Just a common, clever cop who happens to be buddies with Spidey.

Date: 2011-09-08 04:04 am (UTC)You know, I'm becoming ever more convinced that MJ is harboring a growing crush on Carlie. All the glowing compliments, calling her "tiger"...I'm just saying.
I'm probably alone in thinking this, but Carlie's sheer enthusiasm over having superpowers is kind of...cute. I mean, who wouldn't react the same way? But, like so many things Carlie-related, the good parts are drastically outweighed by the lack of genuine character development, the forced endorsements, and the jarring feeling that the writers are somewhere going, "LOVE HER. LOVE HER. WHY WON'T YOU LOVE HER?!"

Date: 2011-09-08 05:08 am (UTC)Well, gee Peter, maybe the reason you didn't think it was the Jackal was because, as far as everyone knew, the Jackal was dead--including you, considering how you actually saw him die during the Clone Saga (Okay, yeah I know this is comics and no one really stays dead, but even so). So really, no one should have been able to figure it out--expect maybe your Mary Sue of a girlfriend, apparently. :-D
What bothers me..
Date: 2011-09-08 05:31 pm (UTC)But what is bugging me in this is how the hell does the Jackel know who Spiderman is? Given the rules of the mind wipe there, aren't people supposed to be unaware of his identity unless he chooses to reveal it to them currently?
Unless of course, they're gonna say that the reason Jackal was unaffected was BECAUSE he was dead at the time. And thus must have pulled a Kraven and had a full scale resurrection, and came back unaffected because he was down in hell or something..
(That situation of a dead person being unaffected by something that's happened to everybody else in their absence actually reminds me of something, but I can't for the life of me think what it is just now...)
I hope they try to explain this, because right now it's the mother of all plot holes in this story..
Ah hah!

Date: 2011-09-08 12:34 pm (UTC)On the other hand, Spiderman #666 was the top-selling comic in July with around 135,000 copies...the only title to cross into six-figures. So I guess they're winning in a moribund market. Obviously, the new DC numbers will feature a sizable jump for September, so who knows? Marvel seems to be getting the result they want.

Date: 2011-09-08 06:02 pm (UTC)Every time I read a post about Carlie and how hard they try to sell her I think of how WWF/E would do the same exact thing.
Vince McMahon would find some huge talentless slug that no one but him cared about that he would constantly try to make look good.
And the audience would change the channel or go take a leak whenever said wrestler was in the ring.
Kind of like how I don't buy Spider-Man comics.
