In Fantastic Four #175, by Roy Thomas and John Buscema, Galactus wants to eat the High Evolutionary's Counter-Earth. He tells the Fantastic Four he'll spare the planet if they find a suitable replacement. They fail, and Sue accidentally ends up trapped and what is apparently an inhabitable planet.

The High Evolutionary attacks Galactus, who sends him to the Negative Zone. The remaining members of the Four battle Galactus, when Sue shows up.

Galactus returned in #210, by Marv Wolfman, John Byrne, and Joe Sinnot, when Reed goes to him for help. The Four find his giant ship in space.

Reed's face in the second to last panel of the second to last page posted.

Looks like he got goosed, or something.

I think the first scans were from the first Fantastic Four comic I ever read. In retrospect, I do wonder exactly how an evolution ray had an effect on something that's essentially a cosmic force, but it made sense at the time before Galactus was revealed to be quite so integral to the workings of the universe.

I had been away from comics, and I started picking them up again about the time this was published. Galactus on the cover was too much to resist.

I had to screw with this and make an icon....

Thanks for posting this... brings back many fond memories. :-) It was nice to see someone actually trying to do something about Galactus for once, rather than just chase him away. Of course, it could never last (as I'm sure Thomas was aware when he wrote it), since Galactus is too good a villain to leave off the table. Eventually, Byrne would let everyone off the hook by establishing that Galactus' existence was necessary to the balance of the universe, or somesuch.

The Trial of Reed Richards was actually a pretty great Cosmic Marvel story (arguably one of the first true ones). Having the Shi'ar prosecute Reed on behalf of dozens of races decimated by Galactus' feeding was a pretty fun story.

It's a great premise, but I was disappointed by the way it raised valid moral questions (can you just sit back and let Galactus die, even though you know he's killed billions, and will kill billions more if he lives?), but then sidestepped them with a too-pat ending (God says Galactus has to live, so never mind).

That's a fair cop. Comics are generally pretty weird about that: it's totally okes to depict 12 different version of Satan, but the only representations of God can only be totally out there, like Eternity. Although Eternity here was used as the ultimate 'Reed's right' explanation. Otherwise, I'm not sure how you could ever resolve it without continually revisiting it.

Damn Skippy!

The Trial of Reed Richards was a high water mark, indeed.
