Nightwing #1 - First pages and the red-eye explained

Found these over on tumblr, I suspect they might be from a preview copy, since they do appear to be scanned rather than released graphic images.

We've seen a couple of these pages unlettered

I like that Dick's confident about things again (even if calling himself "flawless", whilst possibly accurate from any number of angles seems a little presumptive) and especially that the red eyes are not his standard look!

Thanks for posting these pages. It's good to see Dick back to his Nightwing identity.

Some people may see it as a downgrade from Batman, but I don't. Nightwing was all about moving out of Batman's shadow and becoming his own man, so really it is just him being himself again. Plus if being Batman made him more confident and self assured then ever, then that is good too.

Maybe I should change my icon to red?

Not liking the combination of the dialogue with the last page layout. Although that might be as well because I'm reading from a small monitor.

My one concern will be how they handle the transition back. Dick taking on the Nightwing role again is fine, but giving up his role as Damian's mentor... that will have to be impressively well handled and so far Morrison has been not been good at writing Dick for them (Damian yes, Dick no)

Yes, as noted before, aside from some age shifts, the Bat titles are pretty much unaffected by the relaunch, so all of Morrison's run is extant.

Well, Higgins has said that Damian will appear in the book, so I don't think he's completely abandoned Damian.

But all compressed into five years, so if it's been almost a year since Batman RIP, everything up until RIP, including all the pre-Damian Robin careers, happened in about four very busy years. I think that's the kind of thing we're supposed to just try to not think too hard about. . .

kind of what I was thinking. Then I realized that for about the first 43 or 44 years of his existence he wore a red shirt so bright it made jokes about him being a distraction for criminals so they didn't shoot Batman fairly common

Although DC haven't seen fit to announce it properly, Batman and some other heroes have been around longer than the five years the Justice League has as a team. Current estimates suggest maybe ten years for Batman, since he seems the oldest of the JL.

No, I agree. The direction our eyes want to follow the dialogue and the direction the dialogue actually takes are completely out of sync.

The Bat-history isn't all crammed into 5 years, but if Barbara was Oracle for only three years, how old is Tim? When did his parents die?

Not thinking about it. Not thinking. La la la, wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey bigger on the inside, at least now I can say the most convoluted AU fanfic is just as plausible as canon.

One implication I'm liking- he went back because he wanted to. I.e. Bruce'd have been fine with him staying as Batman as well.

I'm not sure if it's the case, but I hope so.

Night vision lenses....

It should be noted that Dick's used such lenses many times before (Cyborg made them for him) but the default colour for them was green.

Yes, well... This is exactly the main problem I have with Dick. Not necessarily that he himself is always presumptuous, but that his writers often seem to be.

I don't really know that much about him as a character, because every time I've sought out material with a focus on him in there's been an undercurrent of "oh boy, this guy's the awesomest! I'm so glad you've joined us on another Nightwing Adventure, Nightwing Fan! Let me tell you about how oh-so amazing Dick is (but of course you know that already) using a number of clichéd narrative shorthands!" and since I'm naturally contrarian and tend to read against the text anyway, it really turns me off.

It's too much - like a Cillit Bang advert. If I'm going to grow to like a character I need a bit of breathing room. Where do I start, Icon? How do I learn to love dick? Surely you should know!
