Dig the axe, though.

You say I'm assuming the execs don't have the brains God gave corn? You are correct. It's usually a decently accurate assumption.

"She's got an axe!"
"Not that kind of cleavage."

Date: 2011-09-13 12:07 am (UTC)I usually like Chiang's work, but the pose and expression here are just odd. She looks like she's about to take a bite out of her own hand.

Date: 2011-09-13 02:31 am (UTC)I don't see this as overtly "rawr!AMAZONSMASH!" violent as other stuff either. I kind of like it. It has an element of strength (and obviously violence) to it, but it feels subdued and more of "the cool after the fight" look to me. And he just looks so witty in some of the scans. (Parts of the preview have left me kind of scowling-pouty though, but they haven't been anything with Diana yet.)
My only complaint is the outfit. it almost works. But it just doesn't.

Date: 2011-09-13 12:57 am (UTC)Luckily, I have never known Cliff Chiang to draw women exploitatively, even when drawing them fanservice-y, so I am really going top enjoy the art on this one.

Date: 2011-09-13 02:51 am (UTC)I'll admit to never really seeing his art before now. Your description has me intrigued. Is it kind of like Terry Dodson's or Adam Hughes' art?

Date: 2011-09-13 03:35 am (UTC)I don't know Terry Dodson's work that well, but I will say that I don't consider Cliff's art to be ANYTHING like Hughes'- of course, I consider Hughes' work to be VERY explotative (he always has women wearing clothes that are 2x too small so that their breasts are falling out, their waists are WAY too small for their bodies, and they always seem to have 'painted on pants' or their shorts look like thongs). I love cheesecake, but Hughes' work...anyway, no, Cliff's work isn't like Hughes', in my opinion.
Aside from having great coloring skills, he has never, that I have seen, drawn women in ridiculous poses that best show off their breasts or asses- they are usually in action poses and the like, and if the women he draws are in sexy clothing or fanservice outfits (like a chain bikini, for example), the clothing actually looks like it FITS and doesn't look sexually exploitative, just sexy. Hell, on the the second cover of this new Wonder Woman series, he has a woman dressed up in a shredded dress and he manages to make it look NOT ridiculous or like random fanservice.
So, haha, yeah, I'm a huge fan. Check out the work on his site though, he really is amazing.

Date: 2011-09-13 07:01 am (UTC)When I first saw the Wondy scans, I kind of shunned it, but as I saw more, I really started falling in love. And I like this. A lot of people are saying they want the pants back, but to me, the pants looked like they were the 'painted on pants' often so I didn't see the point in having them. And now that we have shorts here, I'm glad they're not thong-type, made to look fanservice-y, etc. (and his version of the pants looked good too).
Looking through his site, I do really enjoy his art! And I'm quite sad that I didn't know of him sooner. Thank you for much for sharing all that with me! I now have a new artist that I love. ♥

Date: 2011-09-13 11:51 am (UTC)Listen: you want a good Wonder Woman? Just use the one from Justice League Unlimited. Warrior, Diplomat and voice of reason with a hint of ingenue and a dash of worldly wise-woman. Give her villains to punch. Done.
