I'm hoping this was just a really awkward primer on the character, and that the next couple're better.

I mean, I can take the first few pages, but that last one.. did we even need that whole page? If that's setting up a character dynamic, I hope it's not a frequent one.

(And I'm not sure if those elbow gloves're either too out of place or too on the nose, so to speak..)

This book ended up being my biggest disappointment of the relaunch so far - Hawk and Dove and Suicide Squad I had low expectations, and no real hopes for, so no disappointment, there (in fact, both were better than I expected, if only marginally) - that last scene, and a similar one earlier, where Michael seems to be reading racial subtext into something for no apparent reason ('No, no, a simple "thank you, black guy" will suffice') are why...

Still, there's potential there if he stops going back to that, or at least sets it up so it makes sense - aside from that, he seems to get Michael, and the story's interesting - so...

???

This doesn't even make sense to me. "Pinko-commie" I've heard before, but this is just weird and (I'll echo the other comments) awkward.

Even still, whenever conservatives say "communist" in place of Leftist, Socialist etc. I'm quick to correct them, especially if they're claiming to be a professional politician. If you're a politician, know the proper definition of the different political theories (because I haven't seen a true Communist espousing a Communist agenda since first year of college; and that person didn't have a hope of running for anything in a state that outlawed self-declared Communists and Nazis).

Well, I think he was being facetious, there. Swap in 'tree-hugging' or whatever intentionally silly derogatory slang you'd prefer. And if you hadn't noticed, the 24 hour news channels misuse political labels all the time, especially when they talk to political pundits who can accuse an opponent of being a fascist, communist, liberal and socialist all in the same breath.

"And I have an IQ of 192."

I refuse to believe this statement until this kid thwarts evil with math a la Amadeus Cho. Otherwise, I can only conclude that he's never taken an IQ test* and is just pulling a number out of his ass

Every time I hear a character state their IQ, I want to bash the writer over the head with a psychology textbook.

* Especially what you have to do to take one. These aren't just little pen-and-paper multiple choice tests we're talking about. It's basically a four-day process where a psychologist test everything from your average digit span to how fast you can complete the towers of hanoi. You want to know how much the WAIS-IV costs? Over a thousand fucking dollars. You use them to diagnose cognitive disorders, not to get a shiny number to brag to your friends about like this twerp here.

Unlike others, I don't really have a problem with the art...except that Mr. Terrific doesn't actually look too much like the established character, to me. What I do wonder is how they're going to link him to the original character if that character has never existed...or find an alternate explanation for the 'Fair Play' logo and such. As a legacy character now without a legacy, I wonder how they're going to play this.

The dialogue is...odd. It's not strictly speaking bad, but it's a little confusing and feels inauthentic. That 'built to handle things' line is just plain weird, for example. It's clearly meant to be a 'I'm capable' sentiment, but it doesn't sound something like a real person would say...at least not in this context.

I do find the boob window in the context of Karen's evening dress to be amusing.

Why bother with an alternate explanation for the "Fair Play" logo? Just have it be one HE designed instead of one he co-opted (or whatever the appropriate term would be, I can't recall how he became "Mr Terrific" in the first place offhand)

One of the weirder things about the art is that Karen doesn't appear to have big breasts. Instead, she's drawn as having an awfully thick upper torso.

And, for some reason, a differently shaped jaw in almost every panel.

I was really looking forward to this and I will finish this arc but I was dissapointed. It was not all bad(his oorigin was entertaing and the humour was there) but I just hate awkward moments being shoe horned in like that. And that white/black comment came out of no where. I doubt the black women was bringing up race and was more voicing her concerns that she did not approve of the relationship between her friend(she has known Mr terrific before his wife died) and this women(there are plenty of reasons not to lik someone then race).

Art was a mess and I expected more from a first issue.

I can see where the white/black comment came from, it's what distinguishes Karen from nearly all the other women at the party. When you are that outnumbered and you are the one getting glared at, I can see why Karen might assume it was a race thing to at least some extent.

While the racial comments were definitely awkward, one thing Mr. Terrific did right that a lot of other #1's have failed on, is that it's quite easily accessable. Everything you need to know is there, along with a hook (which, admittedly, does not really interest me) to get you to buy the next issue.

What I'm thinking now is, I want a Power Girl book and this won't really do the trick.

this is just a guess, but because they probably figure the white person wouldn't be there. Like if Karen were the sort to be the antagonist there, she'd be the sort to just aoid the party all together.
