Actually, he didn't respond TOO badly that time Spider-Man kissed him. He was pissed, but no more pissed than he was every other time Spidey's pulled a prank.

Yeah, yeah, I know. Heh. I'm always a bit overquick to defend Jonah because I think a lot of people, sadly including most of the recent writers, don't get that he actually is a blowhard with a heart of gold and an iron core of integrity somewhere in his veins ... okay, bad puns aside, my point is that Spider-Man is his supposed to be blatant weak point, not the most obvious symptom of his senility.

*sighs* On the plus side, at least he's recognizable, and gets to show up. Poor Marla!

It's good to be reminded now and again that JJJ does have principles. As this is his fantasy, he obviously believes wholeheartedly in what he's saying about the power of the press. An interesting facet of his character is that he really is a damn good newspaperman, despite his irrational Spidey-hatred - he's good at what he does, he stands up for his principles, and he's honest to the core. At the same time, he's an irascible, egotistical, cigar-chomping loudmouth of a blowhard who seizes every single chance he gets to make Spider-Man look stupid, regardless of whether he has to distort the actual situation to within an inch of its life to do it. And it's GOOD that we have these contradictions, because it makes him a fascinating character - he's an antagonist, but he's not a villain; he'll fight for the power of the press, then use it to blame Spider-Man for everything from crimewaves to appearances by Galactus. It's this unpredictability that has made him one of the best supporting characters in comics, not to mention damn fun to read.
