So at this point Miles confides in one his friends, a nerdy kid named Ganke about his new abilities. Miles is worried that he might be a mutant.

As Miles points out, being a mutant in New York City is a very bad thing, given what happened with Magneto flooding the city. He'd have no chance at a normal life if it got out.

Later, at home, he gets a text message from Ganke.

I don't know if calling it a venom strike is really accurate. It seemed to act more like a taser against the kid who was going to mug him, and it blew apart the legos in his friend's room.

I'm liking the fact that he's seeing this as a bad thing. Kid he may be, but kids can see writing on the wall if it's obvious enough.

This is SO growing on me...

Love how he calls himself 'Sir MILES' and his goofy avatar on his phone...

The issue had a great scene with Miles and his Father and I was thinking "Finally!!!!, no Aunt or Uncle or Butler/Caregiver role model substitutes...regular parents giving the speeches of morals and guidance. No Dickery Father (Thomas Wayne, Odin, Reed Richards, Howard Stark, etc...), no Corny, All-American buckeye Dad (Jonathan Kent), a father the reader can relate to..."

Nu spidey

...aaaand then we get the very last page of that conversation. Trying not to spoil too much, but we quickly find out that Miles isn't going to be telling his parents about his new powers anytime soon. Especially not his father.

Great scene, though. I'm a little surprised at ghostface for not posting it, as it was easily the most important scene in the issue.

Gosh, he's cute. I like that he comes across as rather thoughtful and serious minded (despite the straws up the nose), it's not a personality I see much in child characters.

I was going to wait for trades on this, but I think I'll be picking up the first two issues ASAP.

I love how they're making a legacy character look like a really good thing, learning from similarities from the original and trying to get through this sensibly while there still isn't a great tragedy in his life.

And I like how expressive the art is.

SO Frog-Man, Iron-Man, Thing and Fing-Fang-Foom are so love they have their own merchandise? Also, I thought Ult. Fing Fang Foom was more... pointy and didn't look a think like 616 FFF...

And I thought people can't see spiders because they're, you know... small, not because they can blend in the background... then again, he had Supergirls with psycho/telekinesis

Ok, I'll bite. Miles looks adorable and this looks fun. Though I do think it's kind of lazy to have Miles powers arise from being bitten by a similarly made spider to the one who bit Peter.

And just like my last Spider-man post, I'm torn. I'm really loving this kid, and I think he's going to be a great character. But, I can't help but miss Ultimate!Pete. He was also such a great character, and in a time where we have to deal with BND!Pete, a character that I will truly miss...

Pichelli and Rebekkah Issacs are pretty good. Artists like Alan Davis I have no time for, because if the characters are Afro anything, he defaults to stereotypical and brutish portrayals. So glad that he and Fraction didn't get the nod to do an ongoing Young Avengers, omg.

Just for having this kid working through the implications of his new superpowers in a bedroom that still has Kermit the Frog wallpaper on it, I take back most of the bad things I've said about Bendis in the past.

Provisionally.
