That whole scene in the kitchen looks like a great mix of comedy and creepy, with all the dead animals running around freaking the wife out, the sun with a shovel and a big grin to unturn the animal graves. XD

I like where this is going (or I like where it seems to be going,) but I still have mixed feelings about the art. It looks unfinished and a little "amateur" in a way I can't quite get past, and it's one of the few titles in the DCNU that I like for the story but have issues with the style. There are certainly other books with worse art, but I don't care about them anyway so it's easy to ignore them.

What do other people think of the pencils/colors in AM?

I think the figures look good, especially when we get the freakier stuff, like the Hunters Three and the dead animals, but I will agree that some of the backgrounds look a little...bland. The house for a middle-class suburban family seems a little too spartan and clean. I think a lot of that could be the coloring, though.

Oh, the backgrounds are terrible. They're the most minimalist things the artist can get away with it, clearly it's a task they don't like to do. Perspective tends to be wonky too.

A pity, since I like the character and monster art. It's just that it's all taking place in a near-void and can lead to losing a sense of place now and then.

I think the art style actually works in FAVOUR of the book. It's rough, sketchy, and just a little off-kilter.

In other words, it fits really well with a horror-slanted book.

I like the art. I am also getting that sense of "incomplete" and even subtle hints of manga influence, but I get the feeling as we see TRUE monstrosities in the future that this style way pay off.

I usually really hate Travel Foreman's art with a passion, but for some reason it actually works really well for me on Animal Man. The scratchy, overrendered and uncontrolled lines really add to the overall creepyness of the book and the slightly unfinish and/or incompetent looking, weirdly coloured parts give it an almost dreamlike quality.
It would look terrible with any other book or story, but here it just really works.

I'm not keen. I could sort of deal with the pencils, but the colouring is so.. flat. Kinda like someone used the paintbucket tool in MSPaint for it.

Sometimes the art works really well (like the black and white (and red)) scenes in issue one, but still, eh.

reminds me, we have a cat plastodermic (or what it's called in english, one half is skeleton, the other half has skin and fur and organs (though the intestines are made of plastic haha)at the uni, it's AWESOME

To be fair, Fate's probably in Earth 2 now. Besides that, the only hero people I remember him hanging out with in recent times was Starfire, who's probably too busy right now with Jason and Roy.

This is really good. Why can't other books in the DCnU be like this? It would have justified the reboot.

Though there's a hilarious bit I didn't notice, in the panel with Cliff and the shovel, where she's holding the cat skeleton and pulling the largest "I HAZ SAD" bottom lip you've ever seen (even the cat's ocular cavities are pulled down in a sad shape!).

Like I said, Animal Man is definitely my favorite of the DCnU comics, because it doesn't *feel* like it's been rebooted or taken back to an earlier time or anything. It feels just like a continuation of what we're used to, but presented in a way that would interest new readers as well. I like!

Basically. If I remember right, even his most recent space adventures with Starfire and Adam Strange were mentioned in the first issue.

Though it probably helps that his most influential run literally did have a reset button.
