Three and four pages respectively from SWAMP THING 1 and 2...

Last issue, a threat arose...

This issue, Alec Holland is paid a visit by a former Swamp Thing from the 1940s...

Aviator Swamp Thing has come to deliver an important message to Holland:

Aviator Swamp Thing implores Holland to allow himself to become the new Swamp Thing, to stop the monster. Aviator Swamp Thing uprooted himself from the Parliament of Trees to deliver this message, a process that means certain death for him.

He's basically committed suicide to give Holland the call to arms, thinking it was worth the sacrifice. Faced with such a noble act, how does the good doctor respond? Well...

First--what dick move, Alec.

Second, I'm so looking forward to the inevitable Swamp Thing/Animal Man cross-over.

And the Shade/Animal Man cross over. Though admittedly it was just an offhand reference in the preview.

Where was it mentioned in the preview?

But hell, from the looks of it, a whole cross-over with the entire Dark line would be awesome at this point.

We've got the Moon, Sickness itself, a crazy-ass Enchantress, and whatever the hell The Seven Samu- Knights and SHADE are fighting.
This is going to be awesome.

Him and Mikaal start talking about how hard it is to have relationships when you're a superperson, and by extention having kids. Then Mikaal brought up Animal Man as the only superhero he knows of that manages to both juggle having a family and being a superperson successfully.

Which kind of implies that Wally West and his brood aren't canon any more, though he presumably didn't know that Damian is Bruce's kid too so there still might be hope.

Or they just wanted to focus on the dark line stuff to keep things simple. There's having a shared universe, and then there's a whole bunch of random crap happening because of it.

But, considering the condensed timeline and the de-aging of everyone, I'm thinking unless Wally's part of those Sixteen and Pregnant shows, he probably doesn't have the kids. I like to think that he just retired from Kid Flash to get his college degree, and he's trying to get things done without using his super-speed...too much; as well as trying to get that cute journalism major, Linda Park, to notice him.

I'll hand it to this comic and Animal Man: everything that is supposed to be an abomination looks like an abomination. Those three animal-esque things, this Sethe. I like it, it gives off a nice, evil vibe.

This was fantastic. It really built on the first issue, and managed to pack a lot into those few pages without feeling rushed.

I don't know that it was really a dick move on Holland's part though. Yeah, it's not the right decision, but it's a human one and faced with where his head's been at lately it seems more that he doesn't think he can live up to the task. He's clearly conflicted all the same.

The idea that he was supposed to be Swamp Thing, but was prevented, is an interesting one. And new to the series, I think.

Oh hey, another "I am not the hero you think I am *EMO*" moment.

God, I hate those. Welp, guess you're right, you're not a hero at all, sir. So, who's the story gonna follow?

...

Yeah, I figure it's gonna be him anyway somehow, but I'm uninterested.

I don't know. Given that he's being asked to become a monster and give up his monster, I think his reluctance is somewhat understandable here.

He has years of memories of being Swamp Thing and all the horrible things that came with it. I think it's understandable that he doesn't want that again.

Okay, while I'm not sure this my cup of tea, this does look quite good. Suitable horror elements that build on what has gone before without mocking, spoiling or devaluing it....a rare thing in comics these days, it seems. Interesting to see them sort of setting up a mystical mini-Vertigo setting with the DCU...not unlike Marvel's 'Cosmic' titles, sitting sort of off on their own. Which I think is a smart idea.

I think the villain is an avatar of the Grey or the Grey given corporeal form.

This whole thing gives me vibes like I got from Alan Moore's years on Swamp Thing.

The broken neck bit reminds me of Anton Arcane, and brought to mind the Invunche....I still get the willies from the Invunche!
