I have always disliked the term skank, an ugly sounding word with an ugly meaning. I certainly don't like an ostensible hero using it, even if it is to provoke the baddies to make a mistake.

Yeah, that bothered me, too.

I'd like to see his friend there chew him out for it when he gets back. Or perhaps Black Canary who may have been watching the proceedings.

Seriously. And, of course, when he's fighting a female "villain" in a rather tight bodice. Oi, DCnU, why?

To be fair, he said "a couple," so he's calling the shirtless dude a skank too.

No, I think he's refering to the lupine woman on the roof and the woman he punches. The shirtless guy IS "the big dog"

And I understand why skank offends you all, but a part of this series seems to rail against the way pop culture glamours negetive behavior(Gangsters, out of control rich girls, recklessness). The women in this villian gang he is fighting seem to be the spoiled reality tv starlets we see in real life, with superpowers. Coupled with the fact that this is Oliver "my way or the highway"Queen its not surprising if he painted that vulgar of a picture of them.

I feel like I should be more offended, but sometimes its nice to have a hero who wont kill, but at the same time does not give a fuck about generally anything in between(including the bad guys feelings). Honestly I do not know how most heroes stay so polite with the person trying to kill them. Besides its Green fucking Arrow who doesn't expect this from him now, oddly enough he has not had sex in the new dc yet.

Because Alfred would wash their mouths out with soap (and yes, that includes ALL the superheroes, but just the Batclan, because Alfred is just that awesome)

I cheerfully admit to setting unrealistically high standards of my heroes, but that's why they are SUPERheroes IMHO.

That's my new headcanon right there.

We know from the Tomasi run that Alfred keeps a swear jar in the Batcave.

Yeah but this is Green Arrow we are talking about. He would just tell Alfred that he is the lapdog of an emotionally stunted industrial giant, who has not cast him aside yet because he provides him with delusions of a bond to his childhood and a pseudo father. Ollie would then proceed to nitpick about every facet of Alfred's life: Not haveing an actual family of his own at his age(has Alfred ever even been married), Allowing a young boy in his care to go around the world and train in all sorts of arts without trying to offer psychological care, why he allows batman to take more children in under his wing especially after one died, why whenever he "quits" after a disagreement he always runs back to the same old thing, why with all of his skills he is just a lowly butler, and lastly why he even bothers when no one ever listens to him apart from the emotional pep to keep .

GA would start making assumptions that Alfred just prefers to live in the shadows as a servant, because his own life would be racked with inadequacy without feeling like he is needed. Also he would say a part of it is because he blames himself for the waynes death, and badger Alfred to tell him why he did not escort them home that night(even making the assumption that if anything happened to Bruce he would get his fortune). While Alfred is stunned by the audacity and clamoring for something to say, Green Arrow makes a snide remark and asks him to go do some menial task(which of course Alfred does). GA walks away to go make Jimmy Olsen feel bad about basically occupying 25% of time superman could use to save lives.

Alfred would go on to have an emotional crisis after the verbal ass-whooping he gets from Oliver Queen(Same thing happened to Hal Jordan), and questions what has been the point of his life.

Also I get what your saying about the unrealistically high standards, but that does not work for every charachter. They need flaws to distinguish them and personality quirks to make them who they are. I mean isn't that what everyone hates about geoff john's Flash and GL, they are so perfect that it just makes them seem boring. Its good to have high standards for superheroes and it sucks when good ones act like degenerates(Hank Pym would never hit his wife), but making them all flawless pinnacles of social grace who have stopped being relevant to the people who read them because their personalities are so unrealistically perfect.

I think such effort in a reply deserves a round of applause so consider yourself duly... ummm.. clapped.

(Though if you think Ollie has anything LIKE the ammunition required to do anything but move Alfred to amusement/pity/boredom I think you underestimate the man. :) )

And call me old fashioned (what with me being old) but not swearing (and certainly not calling anyone "skank") isn't a sign of perfection, it's just good manners, and that should be the norm, not the pinnacle.

Thanks, I got called into work on saturday so yeah its not that hard to find time to post on the net.

And come on of course GA could strike a nerve with alfred he could get under anyone's skin. Didn't he get into a fistfight with another member of the league for telling to much "truth".

I was not saying calling someone anything out of there name is perfection, I was really just saying that is who he is. True it is good manners, and honestly it does seem to be the norm with most DC heroes(The marvel guys seem more smart-mouthed), but Green Arrows only distinguishable trait not copied from other heroes(I assume that would be an argument Alfred could shoot back at GA, he can have an arrow plane, arrow car, but no arrow Alfred), is his often ill mannered personality. Do not get me wrong they could have used a better word then skank(it did not get the job done for these supervillians), but the charachter we are talking about is a hypocritical skirt chaser who is breaking the law.

Also that is a good discussion in it self how many heroes are actually polite when they fight.

Superman and Wonder Woman of course always keep the social graces, but they are flexible. The Flash does not talk more then he needs to, all four earth GLs can shoot off at the mouth at times. Batman only says what he needs to, while his sidekicks handle the quips. Booster Gold has made mom jokes in a fight, and blue beetle had a smart mouth. Martian Manhunter has always seemed like the type to never stoop to that level, and Aquaman has outright called villians dumb to their face.

I like what you say about Ollie.

How does it apply though to the Man Who Would Be Queen here? Because he's not at all like the guy you're describing.

Barring authorial mandate...

...and then someone on the street would call Ollie a bully and take him to task for verbally an elderly foreigner. The newspapers would all run stories of 'Wealthy Industrialist mocks working class as "lowly"' and 'Queen slanders Wayne Family Butler'. Experts would appear on all sorts of TV shows discussing the hypocrisy of Queen's supposed 'liberal' credentials and Moonday Hawke would come forward to reveal that Oliver had paid no child support for her son and was a deadbeat dad.

Oliver would have a crisis of faith and retreat to an ashram in the mountains, where he would cry every night.

Now that is a comic that I would read, but ollie has never been media shy. His charachter being vilified by the general public is just a work week for ollie.

Yeah, that bothered me too--the real Ollie would be doing some mild flirting while fighting them, not insulting them.
