I'm glad I'm not the only one watching his new series! Agree 100% that damn off-hand comment really threw me out of the comic.

It took you out of the comic? It annoyed me, and made me dislike the gal a bit, but it doesn't seem weird enough to take me out of the comic.

(Now, since it took a page and change for one of them to mention that they were watching a recording of what happened to Alpha, not a live feed, the fact that for the duration of that page I thought she and Ollie were calmly watching a man (even a wannabe thrill-seeking villain) get beaten to death without lifting a finger to stop it - THAT took me out of it briefly.)

Completely took me out of the comic. Maybe it was the fact that a techie was saying those line that really made it still. More likely I am just so tired of that same old line of garbage. Books have "killed" more people than video games have even thought about killing.

I've got my BA in political science and I'm a gamer. It pulled me out because it struck both nerves. I got back into the comic pretty quickly but it definitely threw my brain into a mini rant because I've had the argument about games and real world violence before.

And, see, this is exactly why it didn't take me out of the comic - people have these attitudes...a lot of them. (I don't have that argument with people any longer, I've more than a decade (closer to two, really) since gotten to the point where I feel it's not worth the agita.) So, since we don't know this girl, so we can't say it's out of character, and it's a perfectly realistic attitude, IMO it's just 'file her in the idiot bin', rather than bumping me out.

People do have those stupid opinions, but they typically tend to be people in their 60s, not techies in their early-mid 20s.

'[T]echies in their early-mid 20s' are not immune to stupid opinions, even about video games - they seem proportionately more likely to fall into 'anything I don't get is the root of evil'...it could be video games, it could be furry fandom, it could be anime...they're not into it, therefore they don't understand it, therefore it's evil. (Most likely, they're just more likely to spout their opinions where I can see them, but I sure don't hear it from older people, who generally range from apathetic to positively interested, in the case of video games (if they're not miserable people in general, which is a rare trait among the older folks I deal with, but I tend to associate with older folks in a context which selects for the positive types).)

You have a point, but I think the 20 year-olds who think video games are the root of all evil. It tends to be folks in their 60s who would find the games too confusing to play anyway, or people in their 40s who feel the government should teach morality to people.

Speaking as one of those people in their 40s, I found the line extremely jarring (especially going unchallenged as it apparently does). I don't want the government to tech morality to me or my family...and I play a LOT of video games. I let my children see and play games at different age levels depending on the content. Certain scenes in Red Dead Revolution? Strictly Verboten. Playing Halo: Reach? Not a problem. Playing Modern Warfare 2? Not happening for a few years. Playing Minecraft: all the time. :)

It's not so much that I don't believe that people out there hold that idea, even younger people: it's that it sounds so tone wrong for THESE people. A high-tech hacker-type and her VP Steve Jobs-ian boss both agreeing that video games lead to violence? It rings false.

Fair enough, I didn't mean any offense, I'm just saying that it's typically the older folks who are trying to ban the violent video games--and since you seem to be actively involved in what they're playing, you're not the kind of folk I'm talking about at all. :)

It bounced me out of the comic for a bit too. Not for long, but stopping to snort at what felt like rather obvious shoe-horned in social commentary - using badly written dialogue - did throw me a bit.

I think it's partially because in the DC I can't see video games exposing kids to any MORE violence than they see on the news/down the street/next town over. Or that video games would screw with their sense of reality any more than the revolving door of death that superheroes go with.
