I was surprised that the neighbours name is "Kaffir", which I've never heard used as a name, but which IS a highly offensive term for a black person in South Africa and several other African countries.

Also, looking it up, in terms of Islam (which I assume these people are, given their use of "Allah!") it means "Infidel"

Isn't the root Dutch though? Lots of old Dutch families in the Northeast.
