Some different thoughts--

* Anyone else think Damian looked a little like a chipmunk in the first panel of the first scan?

* If it was in his nature to have anything besides a straight poker face, I'm certain Alfred would have face-palmed right there.

* But at least Bruce tries to make up for it and tells Damian good job. :)

* Damian breaking that bat...yeah, he definitely has more issues going on than before.

* So Bruce is buying a great da--OH MY GOD YES IT'S ACE THE BAT-HOUND SQUEEEEEEEEEEEE--

* Ducard here doesn't sound like the French detective that he was in the comics. Maybe they're going for a Begins approach with Bruce's training?

In that first panel of the first scan Damian looks like he's getting hit in the face by something swinging from the ceiling and the 'O' face means it hurts like hell!

Alfred would so have face-palmed but that would be unbecoming of him.

Agreed! Bruce is trying. He's got odd ways of showing it but he definitely is.

Damian and the Bat... *shakes head* That was unnecessary and wow... I'm glad Alfred SAW him do it. (not shown in the above scans but Alfred did see it he didn't say anything to Damian but the deep kinda heart broken frown that's on his face proves he did)

ACE!!!!!!!!!! SQUEEEEEEEE!

We'll see how Ducard plays out. Some changes aren't too bad.

I squeeed too when I saw Ace, but then I said....NO! It's too soon, no way would he'd be around when bruce is 80 if he brought him now....

But, meh, it's DC, it doesn't have to make sense....

I kind of have issue with Batman not "properly" praising Damien. I'm pretty sure Bruce praised Dick and Tim (and probably Jason at some point).

Are we supposed to believe post-reboot Bruce has no idea how to be a parent despite being one 3 different times?

THAT'S NOT ACE ACE WAS A GREAT DANE MIX GOSH

I don't actually care THAT much but I always get kinda happy when a mix breed is around instead of a purebreed. BUT I guess that will make it easy to have Ace be the 'Bat Hound' because hey! He's just a regular Great Dane!

But Dick had Tim and Damian to play with: in some respects little brothers are better than dogs because you can mess with their heads.

Dick would have had Golden Age Ace, Tim had modern age Ace (The one no one ever mentions any more which makes Icon_UK sad), surely there weren't any other important Robins?

Icon_UK innocently whistles as he starts to walk away then runs like hell for the exit whilst he still has kneecaps!

You know what Damian never did under Grayson's watch? Snap an innocent animals neck.

And I'm not liking the nature v. nurture rant that Bruce was having either. It should be nurture v. nurture. Talia doesn't have an "evil kid." Evil isn't genetic. Damian was screwed up by his parents, their lifestyles and their poor life choices (understatement).

I didn't read any of the run with Dick in the batsuit and Damian as Robin, so this was basically my first introduction to the kid (#1 sold out at my LCS last week so I got them both today) and I must say so far... not a Damian fan. He's a dick. A dick who kills small animals. That's a good sign.

Damian was arrogant in his earlier appearances but he wasn't like THIS! He didn't kill animals and he had some good qualities that were buried initially but really started to show as the series progressed and he and Dick bonded some.

I just think he really doesn't know how to interact with Bruce yet, and that Bruce has no clue how to help him learn to interact. Hopefully this will get better with each issue and each of them will mellow and mold and start to work like a real team.

I liked most of this, with one part specifically coming to mind that I didn't really like: if Bruce died, Damian would still have Dick. Who was doing a pretty good job raising Damian before. I don't think it was out of character for Bruce to say or anything but it bugged me.

Yes.

What's irritating is, Dick was doing a very good job with Damien and had really made a lot of progress with him. Now the whole Batman!Dick/Robin!Damien thing is still in continuity, but apparently all the character development is out the window.

The exchange about praise strikes me as very right for Bruce. Well-written Bruce, imo, wouldn't praise someone by saying "I'm poud of you", because to him his being proud is not the important thing; he'd rather turn the phrase so that his opinion was removed, so that it would seem to be an objective, impartial truth.

I also like that even though he doesn't entirely get why Alfred's unhappy with his praise (that makes two of us), he proceeds to listen to Alfred's advice.

I kinda miss the interaction between Dick & Damian over this... And Bruce seems to regard his son as he was some kinda lab rat... it was much more natural and fun with the D&D dynamic duo!

Oh, and is that a return of ACE?? *squeeeeeeeeee~*

Did they just confirmed that they killed the Russian Batman? I mean, I saw the preview the first issue but I expected that was just a bait and switch because that was a really crappy thing to do with the concept of Batman Inc.

Really mature way to establish a villain, by introducing a character that might be interesting and killing him right off.

Killing small animals for no apparent reason... isn't that how serial killers tend to start out? Not good.

I agree with the general comments that after raising three Robins, Bruce's parenting skills would NOT be this poor.

I can see Damian's moodiness perhaps resulting from his seeming abandonment (And that STILL needs to be addressed) by the one person who actually gave him unconditional affection and support, but he might come around given time.

The book on the whole was trying to show how Bruce is attempting to be a good father and how he thinks on some levels that he is making progress with Damian. Damian doesn't catch and kill the Bat until Bruce has already gone upstairs for the night. Its meant to prove that Bruce isn't making the progress Bruce thinks he is and it illustrates just how troubled Damian really is.

Damian's emotionally stunted, but he grew a lot during his time with Dick, Steph, Alfred, he even warmed up to Tim a bit..... then the one person he most expect approval from & bonding moment with the most treated him coldly. Bruce's cold treatment to him, tortured Damian who tends to bury his real feeling inside then lashed out his bottled up silent anger by crushing the noisy bat (relating it to Batman who rejects him).
This is actually a good writing from Damian's reaction, considering his personality, but this Bruce's character kinda suffer there to pull that kind of reaction from Damian, he's being written as a bad father mode again. Sigh. This is really like, one step forward on both of them before, then in here it's 3 steps back.
