Rob Liefeld: He will never ever ever go away

"Fans who have fallen away from the moronic depiction of Deadpool that has been presented of late will find Bloodstrike more their liking. This is modern, rogue, mercenary action-adventure. Tons of great concepts, as well. Tim Seeley put his Grant Morrison hat on and has some great big ideas." -- Rob Liefeld

Liefeld has announced that he's restarting Extreme Studios and relaunching a bunch of his old characters in new titles. First he'll be turning into comics those unpublished Alan Moore scripts for Supreme and Youngblood that he's been sitting on all these years. After that he'll be moving onto new material. "Youngblood" will be by one of the screenwriters for the Aranofsky flick "Black Swan." More here.

First issue of Deadpool MAX I've ever read had Bob in a relationship with a male sexual sadist. I'd rather read that issue 50 times than glance in the direction of any of Liefeld's titles.

I have spoken.

I like the implication that there's a whole bunch of Rob Liefield devotees who were just WAITING for Deadpool to get back to his generic "bad-ass mercenary" roots. Also, BLOODSTRIIIIIKE. NINETIIIIIES.

The nice thing is that he never lost that. He just got character to go along with it! And what character!

Bloodstrike looks like a case of " Oh, Mr. Sinister, why?! "

.. and sounds like the minor villain from Spider-Man 2099 went barehand.

Dear Rob:

You must have selective reading comprehension. If anything Deadpool has garnered many more fans and a huge following ever since Marvel instituted this so-called "moronic depiction" of him about a decade or so ago. You'll notice many of your beloved creations have garnered more fans since they have fallen into much better and more capable hands of writers who actually know that there's such a thing as character development...Shatterstar for one.

Deadpool is now a fun character with a personality. Also, this isn't the 1990s anymore. Get over it.

Love,

Me

All three of them?!

I wonder how much he is going to bastardize those Alan Moore scripts...

Also, what self-respecting critically-acclaimed screenwriter would willingly work with Liefeld!?

I will never like the work of Rob Liefeld. Never did, and he represents a period of superhero comics I am so glad I completely avoided. (I only became aware of him first by inference, when trying to figure out what the hell DOOM FORCE was parodying, and then when the Comics Journal started attacking image)

Just the same, recently he wrote this, and I'm reminded this is a human being we've all been attacking all this time:

http://robliefeldcreations.com/?p=2906

And this is a guy who, despite a shitstorm of constant attack, and who does actually seem self-aware, still keeps going with what he does and HAS to love doing. Seriously, if this was merely a self-deluded terrible charlatan he'd have become a plumber or something long ago.

And then I think of all the times I've thought of giving up drawing comics because of the massive work versus the obscurity & lack of reward. And I've sustained attack, but not on nearly the level this guy has. And yet after all this time he's still there. So one has to respect his sheer will to press on. It doesn't make me like his work at all or make me stop seeing what it is. But it does make me believe that he's still genuine as a person and as a creator, even if his work in the end is crap. What I'm saying is that if one ever wants to give up, then you're not even being as determined as Rob Liefeld.

And besides, it included this line at the end:

"Laugh at yourself. it’s the single most important aspect of surviving this crazy business. And that’s from the man that gave Cap boobs."

How can you not smile?

Fair point.

[personal profile] darkknightjrk 2011-10-15 19:08 (UTC)(link)
Wait, why are we hating on these new books? It sounds like Liefeld's just the guy who's signing the checks, and we got guys like Alan Moore (who, while easily more talented, seems to have more to ridicule about) and the screenwriters of Black Swan involved. Sure, Youngblood sucked with Liefeld was writing it, but, IMO, there's no such thing as bad characters, only bad creators.

[personal profile] zyriex 2011-10-15 21:42 (UTC)(link)
It seems like Moore's written some scripts, but Liefeld is gonna write up the final product. Not to mention that if he's bankrolling the entire thing, he'll probably have quite a bit of editorial control over what gets written and gods know how much that can screw up the writing of even the best authors.

When I'm older, I want my chest to be that broad and my arms to be that short.

Jesus, Rob, take a life drawing class now and then. I know it'll spoil your delusions that men are all gigantic bodybuilders and women all have inch-thin waists, but seriously. PROPORTIONS, DUDER.

What IS going so awry with the foreshortening on the arms, there? I saw it the first time I looked at it, but for the life of me I can't figure out what's indicating it. Is it the lighting?

Why does Deadpool have those two sticks coming out of his shoulders? They're clearly just sticks, because if they're swords, they have really short or invisible blades.
