Four pages from LEGION LOST 2...

They track down Doctor Scanlon to a cabin, where they give him a telepathic info-dump.

So just a quick question, considering I don't read this one:

This is not the same Tyroc as before, right?

It's really sad that this book kinda became the whipping boy of the New 52--I can't say that I get EVERYTHING about this (does Wildfire have a thing for Dawnstar? Why do they hate asking her to track things?), there does seem to be some interesting stuff going on.

Wildfire has always had a thing for Dawnstar and vice versa. They've more or less admitted they're soulmates, but seeing as how Drake has no body, that's about as much mating as they can do. :-{

And Dawny is a little bit arrogant about her powerset and, as they say here, a perfectionist. She has a tendency to push herself over and above on the impossible tasks, much as Tellus is doing here.

She really should not have bangs, however. Not a good look.

Ah, okay. :)

I wonder if anyone's scanned those early stories or something? I'd dig reading those.

Many of them have been posted over time, but I can't find them through the tags - the dreamwidth tags were no help, and del.ic.ious is all buggy right now. So I'll dig through my scans discs and see if I can put up a bit of a Dawnstar retrospective later today.

AFAIK we've got no reason to believe that it's a new one, what makes you think it is?

Sweet. That's definitely a character I've been curious about--sexy future girl from Earth colony that's grown wings? How's that NOT awesome?--but never knew all that much about.

That does remind me of something--how is her power of tracking different from what Timber Wolf is doing in Lost?

TW is using scent-tracking via wolfen heightened senses, like Logan over in Marvel.

Dawny's powerset evolved to track people/things through the vacuum of space over enormous distances, and is some kind of 'sixth sense' that locks onto traces separate from those perceivable by the usual five. (Tracking energy signatures of some kind maybe?) That's how I understand it anyways - it's comic book science. *shrug*

I don't read legion, so is there a normal member named Tyroc? Because I'm thinking of the infamous black Tyroc.

As far as I'm aware, that's him. I don't know what makes him infamous, however.

Well, yes, the black guy in these panels is Tyroc.

Tyroc's introduction into the Legion is seen as something of a not terribly high spot of the series. It wasn't enough that they had a black Legionnaire, it had to be a black Legionnaire who was from a sort of island Brigadoon, directly descended from escaped black slaves who had made a completely non-white culture for themselves in their islands pocket dimension and who inherently distrusted white folks. It was, I'm sure, all very well intentioned, but it didn't come across particularly well.

Ah, I knew about that. Yes, it wasn't a great introduction for the character.

Yeah, that's pretty much it, though she also doesn't need a spacesuit to survive for extended periods of time in the space, and can fly in vacuum at FTL speed unaided, though she has to slow down significantly in planetary atmospheres.

Oh yeah. The shapeshifter and the teleporter are suppposedly dead, but no bodies. Right.

I just wanted to know, to see how much I needed to rage. (Answer: not at all.)

And that is the extent of my knowledge of him. I actually thought he had been erased from continuity. That's why it seemed weird to me when I saw his name.

I wouldn't say the ENTIRE 52. Some of the books really are good jumping on points, starting with no continuity baggage at all.

In issue 1, 2011 Earth's atmosphere is wreaking havoc with Dawnstar's senses (to the point of causing pain) because it's so much dirtier than the atmosphere of Earth in the 31st century.

He's particularly wearing too many clothes given that he originally dressed like this:

"...I believe your DNA has merged with that of an energy being..."

Apparently we're still playing by Energy Is Matter rules (which I fucking HATE).

I understand it's integral to even Wildfire's background, but I can buy a person's consciousness converting to energy signals (sorta), but the way this was phrased is just wallbanging territory for me.

Thinking too hard, I know, but it's the Legion; I'd like a little Hard Sci-Fi in my space rangers story.

That seems rather odd. Dawnstar's functioned just fine on all sorts of alien planets, and she can handle all the radiation and whatnot in space--but our pollution messes her up?

Still: better than the porno outfit.

You do realize though that Grell is on the record saying he meant that to be a stupid and awful design? (He wasn't keen on the manner of Tyroc's backstory and thought it was racist)
