I confess that I feel Galactus has been so overused and been so unsuccessful in any plan involving Earth that he's lost a lot of his impact. (a bit like Steven Moffatt's comments about the Cybermen)

Still has a great visual of course, but we know from the outset he's NOT going to be able to consume Earth THIS time any more than he has the other dozen times he's shown up (and since swearing not to consume Earth in his first appearance) so what is the point?

Something about his face is making me wonder if this could actually be a warning rather than a threat.

I read it as a warning--he looks like he has something he has to tell those tiny guys on the edge of the crater, not like he's about to make a snack of them... or uh... step... on them (yeah, not really up on my Galactus-tactics.)

Yep. F4 #600 is a continuation of the current FF storyline, and given that the Council of Reeds are planning to create something called Sol's Anvil that requires a geothermal vent in the Antarctic and a dynamo under the surface of the moon, I'm pretty sure Galactus is talking about that destroying the world rather than threatening to do it himself. From his point of view, hey, if somebody else breaks open a planet for him, free lunch! Good enough reason to hang around and see what happens.

I always thought it would be fun, as the starting premise for a superhero RPG campaign, to have Galactus destroy the Earth and then do a Battlestar Galactica thing with what's left of the human race slowly being shepherded through various alien and hostile territories by the heroes who managed to survive.

(Alternatively, to use Lila Cheney's Dyson Sphere as a refuge for as many people as could get away in the last few hours.)

Because, yeah, he's got no impact any more given Marvel's aversion to changing the status quo in the slighest.

Its why cosmic worked so much better. No connections. Galactus could be what they try and say he is.

Good freaking god, we're not even done with the SERPENT doing that. (And even Marvel seems to have forgotten that's still going on) And...didn't Thor just fight him off like, last month?

Yeah, yeah, Galactus wants a snack. All Reed Richards has to do is stick something funky in his face and he'll run away.

Yes, but Marvel clearly suffers from ADD and just has to have something big happening very shortly after the last event, because you know, god forbid the books were allowed to breathe and to develop that cohesive shared universe without the threat of the latest dumb fucker trying and failing to destroy or take over the world.

I sometimes think DC and Marvel should just put out monthly Galactus and Darkseid comics and save us all the trouble.

I'd quite like a 'your planet is fucked' crossover. Twelve issues of all the bad guys you'd ever want to see just trashing stuff. And no happy cheesy piece of crap ending with the heroes magically triumphing, just Galactus and Darkseid versus Godzilla and Cthulu at the end of the world.

Don't worry, we'll get someone who won't lose his focus writing it this time round. We'll put Warren Ellis on it and it'll be snippy and sarcastic and the best end of the world EVER.

Yeah, but do we need/want another rather obvious author-insert cynical, world weary yet vaguely heroic, character?

If it's the quality of the Authority, Stormwatch, Planetary, Desolation Jones, Transmet, the 'Ellisbolts' or FreakAngels, yes. I'd rather have a cynical Jenny Sparks type as our way into and lead through a story than changing the focus so often the book has no focus.

Didn't they try doing that with the Golden Age?

You mean the Heroic Age? And yeah, they did. But there's 'trying it' and giving it time to see whether or not it's a viable concept. Marvel didn't do the latter, because we were already seeing lots of hints for Fear Itself shortly after the Heroic Age stuff kicked off, with those godawful 'Do you fear..?' things they put out.

The fact of the matter is that they're too afraid to try and do really, really big stories in the regular books now, and those that are telling really, really big stories, like Hickman in either his FF or Secret Warriors work, don't receive nearly the amount of attention they should because they aren't the top dogs at Marvel. Every 'big' story these days is made into an event book with a billion and one tie-ins, whereas ten years back, Fear Itself or Secret Invasion, maybe even Civil War or House of M and World War Hulk? They would've been crossovers. Same problem, I know - a book gets a few months taken up by an event some might not be interested in, but at the very least, you wouldn't get this weird artificial inflation of sales because a book ties in to a huge event.

As it is.. Every Marvel book basically looks like it's treading water until the next big event.

I know Galactus is overused as a threat, but I like the kind of conversation Hickman wrote between him and Reed last time, and I could definitely go for more of that. I'm pretty sure the teaser is just re: the Council of Reeds attempting to destroy the world to make their gateway back home in the current F4 storyline. Galactus isn't threatening the Earth, he's just chillin' on the moon, hoping for the chance to pick up a free snack if somebody else destroys it for him.

Plus he's already said he doesn't want to get near Earth himself because he's scared of Franklin.
