Lesse, McCoy is of course fully qualified. Kitty should really be doing something more technical. Rogue can *lift* qualifications, so she's good. Aside from that, kinda sucks :)

I think they're a little light on traditional courses, too ^^; Outside of linguistics (which they have two of!), you've got History (but only from Logan's personal experience), Algebra (only math course!), and then Henry's deep-end science course.

Bobby, technically is an accountant with an MA. Havok is a geologist. Kitty has some sort of degree in something(?)

Why don't they have Cecelia Reyes teaching Bio or Chem? Or Xavier teaching bio or chem? Those two are actually doctors in their fields...

(And, yes, I get this is a gag. But for being a "school" they have surprisingly few qualified teachers. Also, I see no note that parents shoudl take out life insurance on their children as there is a good chance they will get killed within the year.)

"[...] having belligerent sexual tension with Remi [...]"

Has this actually happened in the comics? Cus I'd have to find them. And then curse that it's not Beast. Actually Cecilia-Beast-Gambit is the most entertaining idea for a love triangle I've heard in ages. That's certainly a different dynamic. And it could end by Gambit suggesting a threesome, which Cecilia is excited about and Beast goes along for the new experience and to make Cecilia happy. OT3.

Yeah, it was always a little odd.

I believe it was a bone of contention with Byrne and Claremont when creating her. Byrne wanted her to be a much more average kid, no unexpected areas of mental brilliance, but Claremont wanted her to be a child prodigy as well as a mutant.

She was also brilliant at electronic engineering and computer hardware, one reason why she and Doug got on; she built the computers, he programmed them.

Everybody's a Professor. Or a Doctor. In comics.

Like, only Doctor Mid-night (and the actual one!) is a full fledged real PhD certificated Doctor.
Doctors Light, Doom, Strange, Octopus,...? not these guys.

Was Professor X an actual Professor anyway? Or did he brainwash people into giving him the qualifications?

Black Canary was surprised to discover Pieter was actually a qualified MD "In our line of work, you'd be amazed at the number of people calling themselves Doctor who've never even heard of the Hippocratic Oath" (though of course, Doctorates are not unique to Medicine),

Both/All the Dr Lights have been qualified Doctors of Optics and/or Physics.

Dr Otto Octavius was a noted physcicist before he was fused to his arms, so yes, he's a Doctor.

I thought all the Dr's Mid-Nite (and the short lived Dr Midnight) were medically qualified as Doctors.

Stephen Strange was a qualified MD and surgeon, so would be perfectly entitled to call himself Doctor. (Though if he was in the UK as a surgical consultant he might have used "Mr", but the exact titles used in British hospitals confuse me, never mind the US, so it may be the norm for a surgeon to be Doctor.)

"Professor" means something different in the US to most other places. In Britain (and Europe in general) Professor is a legally distinct title (like Mr, Miss, Ms or Dr etc), and is conferred to a specialist in their field by a University usually to indicate a Department Head. In the US, it's a job, not a title and can be conferred to any teacher (though usually in college or higher educational establishments)

I do remember that actually! Was in the pages of JSA or Green Arrow though? I wanna check it back...

Surely Doom must have a PhD in something scientific? (Though he may well be loaded with honorary doctorates from universities in Latveria and its satellite states.)

I did always wonder why it was "Mr. Fantastic" and "Doctor Doom" when surely Richards must be a PhD several times over.

Doom left (was expelled from) Empire State University without having achieved his degree IIRC.

I'm not sure Latveria is large enough to have more than one University, if it even has one (Doom likes his peasants to know their place and a university would be too ripe a source of rebellion)

You're right about Empire State University, I think.

You're also right about universities being a hotbed of rebellion... but if the Latverian youth had no colleges in the country, those that did not stay and till the land would have to seek education abroad, where they'd be exposed to influences that might harm their patriotism. Better to have a fully-funded state university, with mandatory classes like "Great Deeds Of Doom 101" and "Advanced Techniques for the Final Defeat of RICHAAAAARRRRDDDSSSS."

...I still bet Doom would be offered the occasional honorary doctorate from universities outside Latveria hoping for funding, though.

salinea: (chagall)
From: [personal profile] salinea
why wince? There's no right and wrong when you study languages. There doesn't exist a platonic idea of what language should be. There just is what there is. It's data, if it's how people speak then it's legitimate linguistic data. It's cultural wealth. It's wonderful.

why wince?

Aesthetics.

I'm certainly not saying there's a "right" or a "wrong" way to speak, but there is a sort of spectrum of accents ranging from "Soothing to the ear" and "Assonant as all get out". And most of us could think of accents from both ends of that spectrum.

As someone from a part of Scotland with a powerful, and frequently near incomprehensible to outsiders, dialect and intonation, I am more than aware of the problems that can present.

Nah, I really feel like the whole "Kitty doesn't like/trust Emma" thing is pretty well founded. In the story where both characters were introduced, Emma was hunting Kitty like an animal. In the next storyline, she swapped bodies with Storm and attempted to kill her in while in the body of the woman she loves like a mother. Even after changing sides, Emma spent a lot of time insulting her and one of her best friends. (Rachel.) I think Kitty is one of the few people who should never really get along with Emma. (The other one being Storm.)

~Jean Grey and Scott walk into Logan's class, he stands by the board, lecturing on something~

"Hey there Jean, Douchebag."

"Really wish you wouldn't call me that in front of students."

"No problem dickbag, you want to see how the kids are doing?"

~Jean smiles and ignores Scott's attempts to construct a shank out of paperclips and pencil erasers and points to a young student in the front row~

"Tell me about the the battle of Bunker Hill!"

~The student grins~

"I know that Professor Logan had sex with three women at the same time while battle was fought!"

~Jean's smile deflates as quickly as a balloon in a needle factory (that analogy brought to you by Anal Co, you can't spell analogy without Anal!) she points to another student~

"Um....Tell me about the New Deal..."

~the student grins~

"That's what Professor Logan called his penis during the 30's! He said that the women he met called it a new and very big deal!"

"Logan, please tell me you haven't just told these students about the women you've slept with."

"Of course not!"

~Scott sighs out of relief and puts down his milk carton shiv~

"That's my 3:00 class, this class is all the women I've made love too. I'm thinking of starting another one for the women I've screwed and maybe a quick summer course for the guys I've done."

"The truly scary thing is that I did not see this coming."

okay i admit... i find some of your humor... well it doesn't always agree with me...

THAT SAID... i thought this was where it was going until the battle of bunker hill... (now having far different implications)

everynow and then you hit it out of the park for me

you comepletely turned me around at this point:

and maybe a quick summer course for the guys I've done.

you sir, have won an internet from me... enjoy.... (i would also love to sign up for that last summer class?:)

One character I'd actually like to see here as a teacher would be Shanna the She-Devil. The original, not Frank Cho's fetish fuel. She has a Doctorate in veterinary medicine, an expert tracker and survivalist. They always presented her relationship with Ka-zar as a bit on again/off again, so maybe she's decided she'd rather raise her son a little closer to civilization.

She's not a mutant though, is she? (It seems to be more of a requirement than qualifications)

This is awesome. I especially love "Algebra sucks but you still have to take it."

I always wondered if the School for Gifted Youngsters ever got around to teaching its students how to do stuff like math and English, rather than just having everybody learn to kung-fu fight.

Pssssst. Not adequately preparing the kids for the real world is actually just a way to keep them from leaving.

Mutant literature? There's a contemporary course for you.

And Bamf Hunting? There's two ways that could go, and I'd read either.

You know she was taught by the best!

Bamf Hunting Club. with Headmaster Logn

Five minutes into it Logan starts getting angsty and smacking the kids when they get a bit too rough with the mini Kurts.

I too, but I fear Marvel forces down another X-men centric event in 2-3 issues, which will reshuffle the status quo and cancel this title....

No word. I don't think we're going to see the Beaubier twins around until Alpha Flight gets around to wrapping up. The ongoing just got staked through the heart, so they should be fair game again soon.

Honestly, while I hope Jason Aaron calls dibs on JP, I can see a good argument for Northstar going to either side. On the one hand, he really seemed to care about the kids and I could see him going back to that. On the other hand, Scott may be a controlling d-bag, but working under the guy who disemboweled you is a whole new level of awkward.
