Date: 2011-11-04 05:05 pm (UTC)I don't know, i didn't find it so, and I really enjoy looks at truly alien mindsets. For those mindsets to be humanised and adopt human ways of thinking seems kind of... self-important. But I suppose humans were always narratively privileged in the Buffyverse.

eh. i just think its harder to convey the subtlties on paper which is why its changed for comics. also, if something is TOO alien, then its too unrelatable. IMO.

Date: 2011-11-04 05:26 pm (UTC)I don't really agree with you - one of my enduring favourite books is The Mote in God's Eye, where the plot hinges on the mutual incomprehension of humans and the first aliens they encounter. Blindsight is another amazing book exploring aliens so very alien they don't even have individual consciousness. And the Chanur series has aliens so inhuman that humans can only interact with them through a third alien race. I really like trying to comprehend truly alien mindsets, and seeing them well-done is one of the joys of SF and fantasy to me.

Date: 2011-11-04 05:39 pm (UTC)I find that VERY intruiging to try and comprehend. and it might work for a graphic novel, or like i said, a tv series, and even a book. but not for serialized comic books.
comics books is a strange in between medium. it is neigher purely art, or purely writing. It's a mixture of the two. Books have fare more literary detail than comic books do. they can use less words because they have the art to suppliment that. but the art can only do so much (unless you get an INCREDIBLE artist, then sometimes you don't even need words)
that's why i see the concept of "Truly Alien" dipictions not working well for comics (Specifically comics) NOW if you had Cassady doing the art for angel, then YEAH it could work, he did AMAZING work in Astonishing X-Men.
but for a normal comic book artits the subtlties (sp) that are required to convey that kind of information (making them truly alien yet in thier alieness relateable or intruiging) is... difficult at best and might lose the audience because of it.
again this is for a normal serialized comic book. the exception for me is a graphic novel, maxi-series, novel and television/film. it could DEFINATELY work there.
(oh now you are just showing off your icons :D

Date: 2011-11-04 05:47 pm (UTC)Well, I think it's possible... didn't it get touched on in Supergods, the idea of alien minds? It's not all art, either, it's dialogue and plot set-up too. Yes, it's challenging to do, but I don't think it's impossible with small-world books. (It's much harder with vast shared-universes, yeah - someone always defaults to human in a rubber mask.)

oh i don't think its impossible, i do think that it is very hard. yes like you said challenging. and no its not all art, like i said above. it's the right combination of art, and dialogue and (i know i left it out, thanks for bringing it up) plot set up. but there HAS to be a balance. Art+dialogue+intruiging plot=good story. if ANY of those things are off, it would not work.
John Cassady doing the art for Angel, and maybe doing an Illyria story THAT might work (actually there WAS an Illyria mini that had INCREDIBLE art, and story that knda dealt with that).
small world books would work. those are usually maxi, or limited series' that have one over reaching story so all of it can be devoted to that.
