Well, the main difference between Darla and other instances is that Darla knows for a fact that her continued esxistence if she lets the baby die to save herself is either a quick staking at the hands of Angel Investigations, or a continued lif of killing people before The Slayer or Angel or someone ends up dusting her.

And as for how the babysoul works, I don't know, I just know that she seemd pretty sure that no living baby= no soul. It doesn't really matter if it was tru or not, so much as that she was sure that it was.

And it's still a story about how a woman turns good because of, and dies to save, her unborn baby. That's still the story.

The difference is that she, as she is then, dies either way. The Darla that wouldn't kill innocent children is not going to survive the baby either way, or at least that's what she beieves. It's a question of weather or not she want's to die sooner, or die later and take the baby and probably a bunch of other people down with her.

But every story's different. Every story has reasons why this female character needs to die, or that female character has reasons to wear a thong and pasties, or it's plot-necessary that this female character is raped, and the question isn't how can we make it so the the stories properly justify doing this to women, it's when can we start telling different stories.

Because... it's still the story of a woman being turned good by her unborn child and dying for it! And I'm tired of those! And 'oh she turned good due to the baby because of this perfectly cromulent reason' doesn't help that I am sick to death of women being miraculously transformed by motherhood! I don't care if she had to sacrifice her life for the baby because otherwise Buddha would have beaten her to death with a flowerpot so that makes it ~different~, I care that she sacrificed her life for her baby.

This is like the fourth time I have explained it: it's still the story of a woman being turned good by motherhood and dying for her unborn child. And if Joss Whedon is so fucking fantastic he he could have found a new story. How about the story of a female vampire pregnant with a living child who hates it and searches desperately for a way to have it cut out of her? Or how about how she's still soulless and vicious but loves the idea of having a baby and plans for her and Drusilla to raise it in bloody domesticity? Or has it and uses it as a bargaining chip? No, we have to do the tired, boring old dance of motherhood makes angels! dead angels!

The whole set-up that she would die anyway is part of the story that the creator made up. You can't say 'but the creator can be excused X part of the story because Y part of the story made it necessary' because the creator ALSO WROTE Y.

I am not disgreeing with you that that was a problematic storyline. I am sorry that I gave the appearance that I was saying it was a good or acceptable story. I didn't mean to offend you. I guess I'm just a bit too tired to be trying to post coherently.

Okay, yes, I'm sorry for snapping; it seemed to me as if you were excusing the storyline's flaws. Communications breakdown, clearly.

I just want some different stories, and while I do agree Joss Whedon is one of the better creators out there from a feminist point of view, there's still so much room for improvement.
