Posting a link to my blog discussing Joss Whedon, Feminism and Astonishing X-Men

[personal profile] salinea was interested in reading about it and I thought maybe a few of you might be interested as well.

i tried to do the class justice, i hope i succeeded at least in part.

the discussions were really lively, and the only thing about it that i was disappointed about was that it was too damned short :D

Heh. Yes, but I was wondering if the seme/uki dynamic was still such a dominant interpretation of relationships more generally. In slash media fandom, the top/bottom relationship has been pretty thoroughly challenged, for example. Not top/bottom isn't still a thing.

I'm not entirely certain, maybe not for every anime/manga fandom, but it's still a very large influence.

And it's still very much in effect in everything published yaoi/BL.

.... harder to find in anime.

I liked the way the recent n°6 handled the main characters' relationship, though you'll have to take into consideration the fact that the plot, and especially its ending, was very lacking.

Most other anime series are, err, kinda rapey. Or they're slash baits without being canon m/m.

Err, i guess there's always X.

X isn't yaoi as such. At least in so far as yaoi usually describes a work that is romance / porn. But err, yeah, I guess describing it as having gay theme is more correct.

Even more so of Tokyo Babylon, its prequel, (though that's manga, not anime - I'd reccomend reading the Tokyo Babylon manga, then checking out the X anime series actually).

well good luck with that. Most animated gay movies are mostly porn with story elements that aren't all that good. Junjou Romantica is decent if you ignore the Rape is Love in the first scene, Sukiskyo is also decent enough if a bit weird; and of the porn-y OAV I've seen I think Winter Cicada was the one with the most decent plot. Oh, and Close the Last Door though it's barely the beginning of the story that only got to be animated.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaoi#Seme_and_uke

It's yaoi manga/dojinshi thing. Every male gay couple is seen through the lens of one being a top, the other being a bottom. Everyone. Always. There are only very few exceptions (in published manga), and as far as manga & anime fandoms, it sheds a large influence in how people write them.

I love D/s dynamics in my couples, but that shit gets tiresome fast.
