Hmm. Not sure if this escapes the prat bit, but both Clark and Peter have said on different occasions (when they were still married) that Lois and MJ are the thing which gives their life meaning. They may be superheros because of accident, genetics, tragedy, or whatever - all in the past - but Lois and MJ are what they are about in the present and future. They don't "deserve" them because of their heroism, but they do derive pleasure, happiness, joy, and meaning from their relationships - and, on their best days, try to give their wives the same.
