Date: 2011-11-25 04:08 pm (UTC)What's wrong is how having Amy's brain inside is making the Doctor's eyes disappear!
"Oh baby! I'm beating out a samba!"
Date: 2011-11-25 06:24 pm (UTC)Either way, great story. Especially the bit about Amy saying "Oh no, do it again. But do it slower...." Amy's crowning moments of awesome will never cease. ♥
Re: "Oh baby! I'm beating out a samba!"
Date: 2011-11-25 08:55 pm (UTC)It wouldn't be so bad if we actually got other stuff that was great alongside River, but every time she appeared, stuff got derailed, frankly;
The Silence are a bunch of aliens! But who cares because here's River Song to give the Doctor his 'The Reason Why You Suck' speech.
Let's have an intriguing title for an episode, oh, I don't know - Let's Kill Hitler! Now, have said dictator feature in less than half the episode and focus on River rather than some wacky hi-jinks with Nazis!
The Silence are actually a bunch of almost religious zealots (and aliens) dedicated to stopping the Doctor, but who cares? Here's River Song to fuck up time because she wuvs the Doctor so much and couldn't possibly have told him this the last time she lectured him.
Re: "Oh baby! I'm beating out a samba!"
Date: 2011-11-25 09:21 pm (UTC)Honestly I think series 6 was just there to reveal to the audience of what was LONG suspected, and by then it was hardly a surprise anymore. The "big reveal" that River was the Doctor's wife all along was nothing short of just the other shoe dropping. The fact that she also turned out to be a Time Lord and Amy's daughter was not surprising to me either since I pretty much expected it to go that route by the end of episode 2 of the sixth series.
Speaking of the Silence, I was more disappointed that they didn't make more appearances throughout the series considering how important they were in series 5 and in the first two episodes of series 6. Nope, instead they were just thrown into the series finale for consistency, which didn't do them justice IMO. I thought they were a pretty cool new monster. :(
Re: "Oh baby! I'm beating out a samba!"
Date: 2011-11-25 10:08 pm (UTC)The Silence had the potential to be as good as the Weeping Angels originally were, and whilst I get the feeling we're not entirely done with them yet, Moffat's repeat uses of the Weeping Angels.. Well, that two-parter wasn't nearly as good as Blink. I also felt that Moffat kind-of wrote himself into a corner with the Silence aliens by booting them out of control of the planet seemingly via the moon-landing footage, which kind-of means that they shouldn't have been allowed to be around in 2011, unless I missed something. But he just seemed a little too quick to work around his own rules established with them, and wanted to get rid of them far too fast.
And Let's Kill Hitler was just disappointing, save for Rory's fantastic 'SHUT UP HITLER!!' moment, where I got the feeling he felt just a little bit odd saying that. :)
Re: "Oh baby! I'm beating out a samba!"
Date: 2011-11-25 10:16 pm (UTC)The Silence still being on Earth isn't that surprising, they're no longer in control, and they can't risk being seen by the population, but they can still move around as long as they stay hidden. (Of course the real question would be why Amy and Rory don't already have the "Kill on sight" command in their mind from having watched the moon landing in the present before travelling to the past)
Re: "Oh baby! I'm beating out a samba!"
Date: 2011-11-25 11:04 pm (UTC)I do agree about the Silence being potentially good villains though; they were amazingly scary in the first two episodes, but I felt Moffatt offed them WAY too soon as you pointed out. Considering they were mentioned a lot in the last series, I felt they should've had a stronger presence throughout series 6 in order to build up to the events that unfolded in the last episode. Or if the Doctor was going to off them after two episodes, I felt more should have started surfacing since by then he should have been thought of as a more serious threat than what was originally thought. I do hope they come back in the future and hopefully a better plot is done with them.
Speaking of Weeping Angels, I wonder if they'll be back in future episodes as well since Big Bang II should have restored them back to history?
Re: "Oh baby! I'm beating out a samba!"
Date: 2011-11-25 10:10 pm (UTC)River is suffering from chronic over-use, she'd be a fun character maybe once a season, twice as a surprise, but it's focussed on her too much to NOT be annoyingly distracting.
I don't think you could have probed the whole "We can't kill Hitler" bit without getting into potentially tasteless territory. All we needed to know was that his death was a fixed point in time and as such couldn't be messed with.
And Season 6 also gave us, amongst other things, "The Doctor's Wife" (awesome) and "A Good Man Goes to War" (which explored the concept of an angry, vengeful Doctor very well, and also gave us Commander Strax and Madame Vastra, so it wasn't a complete waste.)
Re: "Oh baby! I'm beating out a samba!"
Date: 2011-11-25 10:42 pm (UTC)With series 6, I felt that a lot of the character development was forced rather than gradual (particularly in River's case), the pacing tended to fluctuate between fast and slow, and the whole premise felt a bit convoluted to me. The only consistent thing we got was finding out who River Song was (which was more confirming what people had long suspected), and the reasons for the Doctor's death, but even then didn't really lead to anything 'epic' or mind-blowing like the last series did.
B-E-A-UTIFUL!
SLOWER, THEN FASTER, THEN SLOWER, THEN SWAP BODIES, THEN FASTER WITH SWAPPED BODIES...
JUST DO IT AGAIN!
