Marvel Announces "AVENGERS VS. X-MEN" for 2012

On a story level, the focus of 2009's X-Men "Second Coming" crossover, Hope Summers, will once again be the center of attention in "Avengers Vs. X-Men," as the presumed host for the returning Phoenix Force. In fact, it's the threat of the returning Phoenix Force that will instigate the conflict in the first place, Alonso says. "The Phoenix Force is the spirit of destruction and rebirth. It razes worlds to create something new. It's bad news if you happen to be living on the world about to be razed. It's great news if you're what's going to be the outcome of that world."

Also taking center stage is the Scarlet Witch, who, in many ways, instigated this conflict years ago when she used her reality-altering powers to all but erase mutantkind from the planet. Bendis, who scripts her story in the series' prologue issue, told the newspaper,"She's been on a road of almost impossible-to-perceive redemption over the last few years and now is going to come face-to-face with the Avengers."

I wonder if Wanda tapping into the Life Force (as explained in Children's Crusade) that helped power up Wanda during Disassembled may have been a beacon to the Phoenix Force (since it feeds on life).

Five writers for one book? I hope they wrote this the Marvel way, where the five plot a story together, have the artists interpret it however they want, then each writer fills in the dialogue bubbles of characters they're responsible for (Bendis for Spidey, Brubaker for Cap, Aaron for Logan, etc). That would be somewhat interesting.

Or alternatively, they could make some money.

At this point, anything that creative or fun is essentially poison to "The House of Ideas". Asking it of them would be as asking Michael Bay to create a well-rounded character or Ryan Sohmer an amusing gag which isn't gratuitously cruel to anyone. It ain't happening.

Heroes being jerks

I really Hope the Avengers don't try and kill Hope just to try and keep the Phoenix Force away from earth. The Phoenix Force has saved the world more times than its threatened it (remember when Jean rebooted the Universe?).

I think given that Wanda had been driven psychotic (she was manifesting hallucinations with her ability right?) that she had no mens rea (guilty mind) and is not guilty of House of M and Avengers Disassembled by reason of temporary insanity. If the Avengers can't forgive her for what she did then at least they can try and be civil towards her, there's no reason to kill her (provided she no longer has the Life Force inside her, if she does then whatever it takes to keep the Multiverse safe).

I've said since I first read HOM the only way they can end this is with a confrontation between Wanda and the Phoenix. If it were me, I'd have it happen in the White Hot Room to keep the body count down, but Marvel doesn't seem to enjoy high body counts these days.

Really hope Scott and his team stomp on the Avengers.

Man am I glad Bendis and Faction aren't writing this by themselves. Faction has amazing ideas, but his endings tend to lack emotional impact; Bendis is a great writer of single characters, but I hate with a passion all of team books.

In other news: Go X-men!!! Show the Avengers what real teamwork looks like.

Are there no more capable villains for heroes to fight in the MU? I guess they all take the summer off and thus the heroes have to fight each other over and over...actually that could be an interesting story. Doom calls everyone up and says, "We shall sip fruity drinks on pristine white sands whilst our hated enemies destroy themselves for us"

It is maybe about Billy going a bit nuts and warping stuff.

But its certainly not a redemption arc for Wanda because she is barely in it.

A Certain unmentionable X-title is already running with one of its mutants being repowered.

And in a shock ending, Bendis has the last person you'd ever expect resolve the issue when Squirrel Girl takes Wanda and Jean over her knee and gives them a sound spanking (thus spawning at least half as many smutfics as Iron Man and Cap fighting back to back) and sends them to their rooms, before inviting everyone else in to talk over their remaining differences over hazelnut coffee and macadamia cookies!

...well, no, but it'd sure as hell be better than how it'll ACTUALLY end...
