Have to agree with the kid here; "Socks" is much better than "Ignatius".

I think socks should just be his second name. Ignatius Socks has both that distinguished and adorable thing going for him

OK, that panel with Ignatius (not Socks, damn it!) giving his paw to Animal Man really got me.

Still, this story is pretty derivative of Alan Moore's '80s Swamp Thing; a Parliament of Limbs? Other Animan Men?

Given that this story mirrors the one going on right now in Swamp Thing, it's hardly a surprise that concepts are carrying over.

Please, the whole concept of The Red is direct derivative of Moore's Green and that got introduced almost immediately after Morrison left Animal Man.
If anything, I think this is giving a bit more consistency to the idea. Both books should have a consistent, shared mythology that ties them together in their corner of the new DCU, I think this would only be beneficial.
And as mentioned, they are set up to cross over at some point.

Animal Man teams up with Swamp Thing to save the world, based on converging their own separate mythologies...is it me, or are DC trying to make a quick buck by marrying the well-remembered Vertigo books of Alan Moore and Grant Morrison, in the hope of marrying nostalgia for successful, challenging books to so-so, derivative efforts hidden behind the 'New' direction their books have supposedly taken?

Because if so, that's sort of...silly. I'll be significantly annoyed if Neil Gaiman's Daniel or Death from The Sandman turn up out of nowhere in this story.

If the current story is well-written and entertaining, who cares if elements are derivative?

Yeah...I don't want to sound like an antagonistic old man (avatar aside), I just think there's so many other unused DC characters ripe for revitalisation, the same way that Animal Man and Swamp Thing were back when Morrison and Moore first approached them. The art and writing here are good - better than the standard DC stuff - but still not really gripping.

Welcome to modern comics, where Ethan Van Sciver thinks an international and varying group of Firestorms in the vein of the various Corps from Green Lantern is a good idea.

These books are still significantly better than some of the others being put out, frankly, regardless of how derivative some of the ideas might be. But at the same time, I don't think it has anything in particular to do with nostalgia for the older stories, especially Morrison's Animal Man, which is respected but tends to get lost in the mix compared to Doom Patrol and the like.

I still don't think that DC are relying on any brand-name or recognition factor when it comes to these sets of characters, though. Swamp Thing and Animal Man both had different writers in different series after Moore and Morrison had moved on, and no run seems to be (whether fairly or otherwise) recognised or respected as much as their particular runs on those particular books, despite said following runs dealing with similar themes.

So to say DC is just using Vertigo nostalgia for Moore and Morrison is a little silly, to me, when they've already relaunched these books in the past. They already tried plugging their Vertigo nostalgia for Animal Man more, for me personally, when they got Bolland doing the covers for the Last Days of Animal Man mini.

I loved Moore's run on Swamp Thing, it's my favorite of his after Top Ten. And that's part of the reason why I just can't get into the new ST. I want too, because I'm loving Animal Man and it looks like those two books compliment each other. But ya. The cover of issue 2 alone was enough to know this wasn't a book I wanted to spend money on.

If anything, I'm seeing more Moore influence in Animal Man than ST.

Swamp Thing's and Animal Man's mythologies started converging even during their time at Vertigo. I still hold that this is not necessarily a bad thing. Quite the opposite.
Hell, one could argue that pretty much all of Vertigo's history has been a failed attempt at recapturing the Lightning in a Bottle that where those early Moore, Morrison and Gaiman runs. So this is hardly a new development.

Still, there's something to be said about the notion that the vast majority of the New 52 is more a retreat than a step forward, an attempt to achieve success again with things that worked in the past. However, judging by DC's recent output the choice is either between creators respectfully building up on what has come before and being really into the things they work with (Snyder is positively giddy about Swamp Things in interviews) -as I feel is the case here- or a pitiful rehash of all the worst elements of the 90's -as we've seen almost everywhere else- I'll take something slightly derivative, yet well-written any day of the week.

For a million year old former mystical champion sentient cat guy it's kind of farm-league stupid to hold out "Socks" in front of a small child and then expect her to go for Ignatius.

Calling it now, endgame will be Maxine versus the Arcane kid.

Also, I like how this apparently follows the conventional Anime wisdom that everything is better with a know-it-all cat sidekick.
