Personally I am intranced by the placement of that rope over the, ahh, groinal region on the Nightwing cover. Careful binding work there, cheap wolverine knockoff i'm not familiar with, I salute you!

Even to the extent of showing the over and under of the ropes... It IS rather detailed isn't it! :)

I am actually bothered by the rope around the groin region. If you are going to go to all that effort to tie his arms up all pretty, at least continue the theme down a bit.

Dick Grayson was made for shibari.

I notice in the other solicits...firstly, it seems Selina's left arm is now an extremely short limb with a hand on the end, and secondly we have Jason Todd literally shooting straight at his female enemy's crotch. Ouchies.

That Batwing cover is a clusterfuck. Batwing's the hero and looks like he's playing second fiddle to Batman - and about to crash into him, Batgirl looks like she's about to headbutt Nightwing and crash into one of Batwing's wings, Nightwing looks like he's about to get his intestines spilled across a Gotham alley, and Batman's doing some awkward pose that looks like he's ripping a chunk out of his cape and about to hit the floor quite badly. The only safe one is Damian!

Granted, I was never a master of composition when I was doing various art courses, but.. Couldn't editorial or someone have said 'nice art style, but this cover's a mess compositionally?'

Another composition question: what exactly are the three at the top falling from? Batman and Batwing are angled in such a way as to suggest they came off opposing rooftops from the sides, but Babs, Dick and Damian seem to have 'ported in from midair at that vanishing point.

They're jumping down from their relatively successful positions on the sales charts to rescue the lower-selling character. It's symbolic.

What in the world is Batman doing in the Batwing cover? It looks like he was falling and all of a sudden attempted to do a sexy pose for the camera or something.

He's pulling his cape in close so as not to cover up Nightwing making his spectacular entrance? He knows the value of a distracting crotch-shot.

*Snorts* I do like the declaration that we're going to find out something new about TKJ that we didn't before. Presumably something from Barbara's perspective, when to be frank, the story was never about her and even Moore regrets her being a casualty of what was going on.

Of course, I'm sure Saint Gail will magically find a way to explain things that doesn't present Barbara as a complete putz when The Killing Joke ends with Joker and Batman laughing it up together. I like TKJ, but honestly, DC, you should've fucked it off to Elseworlds status.

There was a good story which told the aftermath of TKJ from Barbara's POV and how she became Oracle in a... Batman Chronicles (I think that was the title).

It has Batman coming to see her in the hospital afterwards and her being understandably less than pleased that when Batman had caught the Joker, both of them were reported as laughing hysterically. Her angey and acid question "What were you laughing about? Was it me?" still strikes me as being one of the strongest comments on TKJ in any medium.

I'm aware of that issue, yes. It still doesn't erase the fact that TKJ should arguably be a career-ender for Batman when the police arrive to find him laughing it up with the Joker. I mean, the entire story has a sense of finality to it. Batman candidly discusses the potential of their deaths with the Joker, the Joker is afraid to get help. The police arrive to find Batman laughing with the Joker - either Batman retires, gets thrown in Arkham, or there's no way in Hell he could possibly explain things to the Commissioner.

Even Moore says it wasn't originally meant to be in continuity. The story with Barbara questioning Batman shouldn't have been necessary, but DC insisted on shoehorning it in there. TKJ is just a very well drawn Elseworlds, IMO.

I just think Babs being shoehorned back into the Batgirl role is entirely unnecessary and people generally are only reading for nostalgia sake...dredging up all grown up viewers from the 60's TV show and younger people who watched BTAS,

I'm sure while it will do well for a while the numbers at Diamond showed it slipped from #13 in comics to #18. Already loosing readers (most the reboot probably has that from month to month, not really that big) but really Gail is going to have to let go with the constant TKJ references/crutch and actually start writing real engaging stories/more unrelated stories and show us how this new-old Batgirl is worth having around. Then when it gets more general, I think readers will leave, because this Batgirl is not even the sunny Babs Batgirl most Babs as Batgirl fans want.

For me right now its not a great read. I'm not caring about her when I should be. I keep thinking "Babs you're acting so fucking stupid, you're a six+ year veteran in the hero field even if you're only 22 now, regardless of age you're smarter and more seasoned than this- go back to rehab you are hurting people, you shouldn't be jumping off of buildings GOD". But yeah, Gail needs to drop TKJ crutch, it's getting annoying. And this book confirms to me that Babs might have some serious psychology issues; adrenaline junkie, her motives are very shades of grey and while part of that is cool (Gail writes messed up characters rather well); it is totally shallow compared to Stephanie Brown using the mantle to prove to the Bat Fam (at last) that she has the competency to be in the inner Bat-circle after 15+ years of getting told off/being dead. It also isn't as engaging as Cass whose obligation under the cowl WAS a death wish - her commitment to the Bat and to justice, saving people and to stop death outweighed her desire to live. Babs new opus seems to be just to prove to herself something she should honestly not care about anymore and her actions so far have proven to either be the most selfish thing ever, or the most noble if its really for the greater good (similar to Cassandra)

But the TKJ flashbacks really NEED to go.

Hey, Miller for Stephanie Brown Batgirl did an EXCELLENT use of flashback without bludgeoning the reader to death about it the character's past. Stephanie was tortured to near death by Black Mask. We weren't constantly reminded of it.

Miller had after she was shot in the head (more grazed by a bullet) she has a vision of him torturing her from her perspective. One panel amongst a montage. Nowhere else really in the book is Black Mask really ever mentioned again, but its flashbacks like that give character's weight and underlying depth without really killing the reader in reminding them of it. Seeing that becomes a nugget of gold, like "wow she still thinks about that". And WOW there's no narration needed.

It's like Bruce and Martha's pearls. How many times do we need to hear about how his parents are died, all we really need is an artful portrayal of pearls falling or something transposed to a picture of young Bruce being sad or shellshocked.

Honestly if you took out most of the TKJ references in this new Batgirl book that were explicit ( I mean they REPLICATE panels here its awful) and instead "suggest" them via art; a panel of broken glass, coffee cup and coffee on the floor, her glasses, the glass shards loosely making a smile shape : ANYTHING other than rehashing it, you'd have a better book. Its becoming like Mirror sticking the hose down that guy's throat and we're that guy.

Also looks like no more Hughes covers on Batgirl too, which honestly kills that appeal too.

So yeah, I liked Stephanie Brown as Batgirl only because it felt like a good natural progression, so yes I'm still bitter, but separately as a writer I am first and foremost more aggravated by the wonky writing from Gail. Her writing is usually so much better than this and I can't help to think that while part of her heart is in it, she's writing a character she's always wanted to write etc etc; another part of her heart it is not in it and it shows.

They should have just made it a team-book really. So far in the Bat books Batgirl was the only one who didn't really follow the changes in story. Hopefully Leviathan Rises or even issue 4 may patch that. Probably not.

Chris, seven issues later, and Winnick's still at it with Massacre killing people? Is Batwing the most inept superhero ever? It's just a guy with a sword and an armor! Just take him down with a gas bomb or something, from a safe distance! Oh wait, maybe that's why he's going to Gotham, to get re-stocked. Perhaps the Bat-accountant was doing some number-crunching, decided to focus all its resources on Gotham's crime, and Batwing didn't get any bat-toys to fight crime in Africa. Issue #8: Batwing is made redundant but leaves with a nice bat-severance package...

I guess another bad thing that didn't change either was decompression.
