A few issues ago, Bruce bought a dog for Damian. Cause you know..."boys like dogs" and all that jazz. Well, Damian finally gives the pooch a name.

Can you guess what it is? But first...a visit to Grandma and Grandpa:







Hmmm...I sure hope that dog never meets Helena. ;)

I was hoping for "Ace," but being named after one of the plays of Shakespeare I've read and loved isn't bad either. :D

Yeah, but it's not only one of Shakespeare's tragedies, but it's the goriest and contains perhaps the most repulsive scene in the Shakespearian canon.

It fits that the first Robin to slice off the limbs of his enemies with samurai swords would name his dog after Titus, doesn't it?

Not when the story of Damian's development is about him turning away from that aspect of his past.

From what I'm getting from the panels shown, he's calling him that because he's thinking that Titus was going to get bruised and cut a lot, so maybe he did it soley because (this is a guess as I've never read it) Titus got cut a lot *shrugs*

I don't think Damian means that Titus will get injured, but he'll be there when Bruce and he are injured.

Huh. You're making me want to read Titus now, but at the same time...I'm not sure I'd want to. Is said repulsive scene really that bad, as in "grisly violence" bad? o.O

I don't think it was anything explicitly "shown," but then it's been a while since I've read it.

It's pretty bad, the implications are worse than what is seen, but what is implied is completely grotesque.

I just read the wikipedia article on it and with regards to Lavinia...yeah I think I'll skip this one. it's bad enough our own media of today normalises sexual violence against women, but that scene with Lavinia takes the whole damn cake. No thanks.

I'm pretty sure that Shakespeare's intentions were anything but to 'normalise' what happens to Lavinia, but yeah, I don't blame you for wanting to avoid it.

*wishes she could un-see that bit in Julie Taymore's Titus.*

I watched it as a play at our school before knowing it was Shakespearean, my reaction was something like "It was really, really good. Also, it was the most offensive thing I've ever watched onstage. Ever. Ever. It was racist, sexist, ableist, etc etc etc."

And it really was :(

It's grisly to the point of self-pardy in some moments.

I don't mean this as criticism, but I find it odd that people tend to talk about reading Shakespeare before they watch it... always seemed like it should be the other way around to me.

If I remember right, in the script the actual violence to Lavinia takes place off-stage - but in the film version I watched you do see the aftermath, and it is really grim. :/

For me I like to read the play first cause it's easier for me to follow, plus it let's me know what got left out of the film version.

I actually watched the scene you mentioned on youtube and I think I was more horrified by the people who said this scene was 'beautifully and artfully done.'

On a slightly related tangent, I always felt Shakespeare intended Titus Andronicus to be either a farce or a satire. It's just too goofy.
