First up is Ultimate Comics Spider-Man, where we meet the new Ultimate Scorpion. I say "new" because we already met one before and he was a genetically modified clone of Peter Parker.

...whaaaa?

I mean, I'm all for more realistic redesigns, but really? Why not just make him a new character entirely?

Finally, over in Amazing Spider-Man #682, we're getting "The Next Big Spider-Man Event", titled "The Ends of the Earth" featuring none other than the dying Dr. Octopus.

The solicitation reads "The Doc Ock Story You’ve Waited 50 Years For! Doctor Otto Octavius Holds The Entire Earth Hostage With His Dying Breath. What Price Will Spider-Man Have To Pay To Buy The Whole World One More Day?" (emphasis mine)

This whole "Dr. Octopus is dying" storyline has been going on for far too long and has gone nowhere, so I'm happy to see it reach its conclusion. Because really, we all know that Marvel wouldn't be stupid enough to kill of Dr. Octopus, and if they do, it's only a matter of time before he comes back. At this point blowing off your head with a shotgun or getting torn in half in space isn't enough to kill you.

One good thing is hopefully this will be the end of the ridiculous 'Gimp Ock' look that he's been touting for the last couple of years.

Oh, no, a bodybuilder with a chain is threatening Spider-Man! Call the Avengers!

And hasn't Doctor Octopus been dying since the '90s? The last time I followed Spider-Man with attention was during the early stages of the Clone Saga, and the man was dying there.

I recall him getting killed by Kaine during the Clone Saga but not him dying of an illness.

He actually died back then. Then the new female Doc Ock was introduced. Then the original got better (somehow).

So yeah; Seen it, Marvel!

Oh, yeah! Had totally forgotten that female Octopus! What happened to her?
And also, wasn't Ock cured at that time, like you said, when he came back? Did he get worse or the next writers just forgot all about it?

Also, not liking that new Scorpion, not one bit.
Now, if they'd call him "Ultimate Kraven" (was he already Ultimat-ified? I can never keep track of these things) or simply an all new character...

Ultimate Kraven's been around since the sixteenth issue.

Again, I don't think Doc Ock was ever dying from a fatal illness prior to this. He died when Kaine snapped his neck and then ninjas resurrected him, but he was never 'sick'.

I think she was reintroduced a little while back, though that could be my brain playing tricks on me.

If I remember correctly, it was introduced in ASM #600, that basically all the blows to the head he's taken over the years has given him brain cancer and his body was slowly deteriorating.

Brain cancer... from being punched in the head a lot?

They didn't go with "the originally radiation accident that initially fused his harness to his spine has been slowly killing him, like Luthor's Kryptonite ring"?

(And if "lots of punches to the head" is the cause, why don't a lot more superheroes & supervillains have it?)

Something like how being punched repeatedly stopped his body from healing from the radiation.

Funny thing is, since he was resurrected, he installed some sort of force field around his head to prevent getting punched there. Guess he forgot to turn it on.

I could be wrong on the cancer part, but his body and brain are basically dying on him.

Yeah, the cancer wasn't an issue, it's long term brain damage. Doc Ock is, for all intents and purposes, a Genius Normal, and his opponents have super strength.

I hope he at least has some super-strength to explain why Spidey doesn't just break out of the hold (or the chain's some super-alloy to explain why he can't break it).

Maybe he undergoes/went a transformation that makes his skin have the same durability as Mac's suit?

Maybe Bendis just forgot his hero character has super-strength like he's done repeatedly since forever.
