Gotta say, compared to last year, this year has been good to me and am very much looking forward to 2012! :)

Among the positives of 2011...I guess rejoining this comm after my two year hiatus from it. I was originally a member of the LJ comm before it got flushed by the LJ Gods, and was mostly active there in 2007-2008 (around the time I actually got into mainstream comics). Admittedly I was reluctant to rejoin this comm at first since I noticed things were a bit...well *different* from the original LJ version, but after being here the last couple of months, I gotta say it's been worth it. :}

Comics-wise? Heh...honestly? I've only read three titles that were published this year prior to the relaunch: Power Girl, Gotham City Sirens, and Birds of Prey Vol. 2; all of them being girl-leading books. (You are all now free to tell me I've missed out on a lot. I've had one person tell me that already). :P

All three books were okay this year. Admittedly I felt Power Girl's book was better under the Jimmy Palmiotti/Amanda Conner team since they captured the character's wit and essence beautifully while bringing a sense of fun to the book. It was certainly a nice change of pace from the grim and gritty books I was accustomed to reading. Under Judd Winick...the book had its moments but didn't have the same flavour from the previous run. :(

So now I wrap up this post (and the last remaining hours of the year) with my favourite BOP scene of 2011!!!! :D

All I have to say is if this really is Helena Bertinelli's idea of a good time, the woman's got great taste. :}

As the saying goes...HAPPY NEW YEAR PEEPS! ;)

That's some right purty beefcake, and I thank you most kindly for it, but I don't like this scene for other reasons... It just appears to highlight what lousy "friends" Dawn has in the Birds... It's HER birthday, and THEY may be having a good time, but she clearly isn't enjoying this at all, it seems likely they should have known this wouldn't be her scene, and yet they don't seem to factor her wants in this. They even wait until she's passed out before even thinking about leaving.

(As a teetotaller, I appreciate that people like to drink socially, and have no problem if they want me to go out to a bar to celebrate a special occasion, but if their plan is to go out just to get legless then they can forget it)

Not cool ladies, not cool at all.

That being said, a Happy New Year to you too! :)

Hmmm...I didn't think of that. Good point about Dawn. I honestly thought the Birds were just carrying on a US tradition of 'taking your friends out to a club on their 21st birthday,' 21 being the legal drinking age in the States. So kids here tend to view their 21ist birthdays as something of a milestone in their lives, and typically celebrate by drinking to their hearts content. Most of the time though, it's the friends that do must of the drinking rather than the birthday person. :)

And thanks! :D

Dawn should be over 21 already, as she was happily going to bars at college in the old Kesel "Hawk and Dove" series. She certainly wasn't the naive wallflower she appears to be here.

I suppose being dead screws up such things. She and Doug Ramsey should talk... actually, that would be a fun double act.

Has she died before? I assumed it was just Hawk that died.

Murdered by Monarch in the clusterfudge that was Armageddon 2001, eventually revealed to be alive again (in an alternate timeline the insane Hank had then travelled to) in a hideously complicated plot in JSA)

Well, the drinking age in some states was still 18 into the 1990's, but yeah. She doesn't seem that young to me.

When I first saw this, I had pretty much the same reaction you did: Nice friends -- not!

The earlier series was set in Washington DC, so whatever their age limit is.

I see. I haven't read any books with Hawk and Dove prior to their BOP appearances, so I'll take your word for it. I don't remember if it was stated directly or not in the second BOP series (it's been a while), but I was under the impression she was in her early 20s. :o

Also I didn't know Dawn was dead before. I knew that Hank, Don, and Dawn's sister Holly were all killed, but I didn't know Dawn herself had been dead for sometime as well. Heh, seems like anyone that's ever been a Hawk or a Dove is fated to be killed eventually. :P

"You are all now free to tell me I've missed out on a lot."

You've missed out on a lot. :P

I mean, the current Birds of Prey right now? As good as Gail's first run on it, and twice as good as her second.

I think the team had potential--I just don't think Gail really used them all that effectively, even with the small amount of issues she had.

I love how "Huntress, Lady Blackhawk, and a bottle of grappa" all just turns out to be Zinda drinking Hal under the table.
