By way of Project Rooftop;

A few years ago current Wonder Woman artist Cliff Chiang put forward a notion for a story featuring Japanese characters who would be inspired by the JLA but filtered through their own culture of anime, toku and kaiju...

This could have been a fun Elseworlds, or maybe a DC Nation short...

Meet Batman...

With his inevitable sidekick and enemies!

Superman

Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern and Flash!

So that's Batman and Robin (and the Joker and Harley) by way of Science Ninja Team Gatchaman
Superman by Way of Mazinger-Z (and others) (I wonder if the kid with the controller is Clark Kent, or Jimmy Olsen?)
Wonder Woman by way of Galaxy Express 999
Green Lantern by way of Cobra
Aquaman by way of Ultraman
and the Flash by way of Mach GoGoGo (aka Speed Racer)

(Of course, I'd have held out for the Saint Seiya inspired Teen Titans, but that's just me...

It certainly could be have been fun, probably moreso than the Super Young Team we DID get....

After all, they started out sketched by JG Jones looking like this

And ended up not looking even remotely Japanese on their own miniseries cover.

And for extra legality, from this weeks "Penguin: Pain and Prejudice"

Wise words...

Those are some cool designs. :D

And I like what I've seen/heard of these henchmen in Penguin--they've actually smartened up and realized, "You know, if we keep doing jobs for this guy, we're all probably going to die." :D

Japanese Robin's costume makes Earth-2 Robin's costume look more fashionable by comparison.

I see. When I saw this, my first thought was the Great Gazoo from the Flintstones cartoon. :P

Those are some very nice designs.

Though now there's a part of me that wants to see the Justice League as done in the style of various manga authors.

Oh how amusing a Go Nagai take would be . . .

These are pretty cool, much better than most of the Marvel Mangaverse at the very least.

I personally advocate bringing in the Runaways as Cyborg 009 but hey that's just me.

Eh, it really lost me when it had a Ghost Rider that wasn't based on Kamen Rider. That said the Fantastic Four merged with the cast of Evangelion was random but awesome.

The Mangaverse Ghost Rider wasn't based on Kamen Rider?!?!? Blasphemy! I would love to see Kenichi Muraeda's (from Kamen Rider Spirits) rendition of the 70s adventures of Ghost Rider, that's for sure.

Mangaverse Ghost Rider was Damien Hellstorm's brother and fought chibi demons. It was quite disappointing.

I'd love to see a Ghost Rider story by Kenichi Muraeda but that'll never happen.

Love the Batman design to bits. Superman's robot redesign would work WAY better as a Billy Batson/Captain Marvel thing, though.

The reason it's Superman, though, is because he's the "man of steel." Kinda loses its meaning if it's Captain Marvel.

This is true, I hadn't thought of that interpretation. Still, Clark Kent copping Billy Batson's alter ego is a little cheap IMO!

These are SO much better than Super Young Team!

(I always hated them. It's very clear to me that Grant did very little research on them. Just like with Great Ten, he picked some "buzzwords" from the culture and ended up with something that not at all reflects the culture or country)

Hmmm. The Green Lantern one seems rather bland. Plus nothing really evokes Lantern either.

Interesting that Aquaman seems to have implied shrinking/growing powers. Neat.

Perhaps it was done as a way to demonstrate Aqua-Ultraman's power over all aquatic life, regardless of size and weight.

Hook me up with Science Ninja Hero Batman and Mecha-Superman. Truly they are the World's Finest. The looks for Flash and Wonder Woman seem cool too.

By the way, is it just me or does Green Lantern look like Cobra the Space Pirate?

I would love to see these ideas or others been used for the Elseworlds stories. In fact, it would be awesomeness filled with more awesomeness if we could get mangakas to do their versions of the DC Universe. It did wonders when Kia Asamiya did his version of Batman (I will be glad to post it if you want it). Ahh, we all can dream.

Dang it! Now I can't stop picturing David Bowie cosplaying like the Joker or vice-versa. It would work quite well considering one of Bowie's songs is called "Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)".

Wait wait wait, what's up with her hips on the Super Young Team cover? 'Hips don't work that way' is inadequate. You need to be able to tell how the hips are supposedly working before you decide whether or not hips work like that, but that's just impossible here. I cannot parse those hips.

"Superman by Way of Mazinger-Z (and others) (I wonder if the kid with the controller is Clark Kent, or Jimmy Olsen?)"

I think the signal watch makes it obvious that it's Jimmy. The scientist parents in the background, though, seem to be Lois and Clark.

Remember what happened to the Japanese version of Spider-Man? I'll quote Cracked here:

'Perhaps the most infuriating aspect of our Spider-Man is his whiny self-doubt. Trust the Japanese to get down to brass tacks and just fucking nail the character's true appeal. It's like they said, "Screw that annoying pathos. This is a show about a man in a leotard who walks on the ceiling. We've gotta add some giant robots and take this shit to the next level."'
