So here's the big Bat Family crossover of the year, and it's being orchestrated by Scott Snyder, so it's bound to be awesome judging from his previous and current output. :)

The first backup, in issue eight will give a sense of the terrifying scope of the Court of Owls' attack on Gotham. This really will be the first shot in a war for the soul of Gotham City," said Snyder. "And then, starting in issue nine, we'll begin a three part story called 'The Fall of the House of Wayne' that will investigate the secret history of the Court of Owls and its relationship to the Wayne family – particularly to Thomas and Martha Wayne, Bruce's parents. The story will be told from the point of view of Jarvis Pennyworth, Alfred's father, and offer some big surprises and shocks about the forces that shaped the bat-mythology as we know it. Can't wait for you all to see these stories!

"I'm also excited to be co-writing with my friend, James Tynion IV, a young writer I'm extremely excited about. Especially in the spirit of the New 52, it's a real thrill to get to give someone new and talented a chance to get his foot in the door, and James is a writer to watch and expect great things from!"

"And of course, I'm over the moon about getting to work with my good friend and AMERICAN VAMPIRE co-creator Rafael Albuquerque on the some of the very first ones!"

Covers for the story which are also very pretty,

It being a crossover that involves the Bat Family that involves Scott Snyder, I'm going to add my standard hope that Cass or Steph will make an appearance, though I'm getting a feeling that they've been put into a crowd of "Not to be used" characters at the moment, like the non-Darkseid New Gods. Still, here's me being hopeful. :)

Batman is about protecting GOtham. The Wayne's are important. Very important. But there is more to him and to Gotham than the Wayne family history

Personally I like the history of Gotham explored, and I think that the idea of there being more of a historical basis for the conflict in the story makes a change from the umpteenth gangwar crossovers that have been going on since No Man's Land (though I liked that crossover) or Ra's al Ghul related hijinxes.

I think it depends, recent writers, notably Morrison and Snyder have spent a LOT of time (years in fact) on convoluted generational conspiracy stories involving the Waynes family history and Gotham. This is... more of the same.

Frankly I was hoping with the DCnU we'd see more classic Batman "crime stories", not gang wars, not conspiracy stories, but some akin to criminals trying to outsmart Batman. They may be classic, but Dini is the only one who's even tried a story like that in YEARS.

Part of me is a little annoyed that I have to pay an extra dollar for this book, but for more Snyder and Albuquerque on art, I'll take it.

By the way, on your tags, it's the "Court of Owls," not the "Council of Owls."

To me, it's still better than what Marvel does, which is $3.99 for jack shit in terms of extra pages. At least we're actually getting more story for our money, and it's a more well-thought-out backup story plan than the previous set, where everything except Rucka doing both Kate Kane and Renee Montoya in Detective Comics never really made sense.

Not quite true, the Court appears to have been influencing Gotham architecture for decades, with hidden floors, and owl gargoyles all over the place.

The current crop of writers didn't grow up with them and aren't their pet characters.

Ergo, they've been deemed useless.

I am actually excited for this. As long as the backups are enjoyable, I'll give them a shot. And I mean, I already pay a dollar more for Marvel comics I like than I do most DC ones, so I don't have an issue paying $1 more for something from Snyder. I'm really curious to see how this spins out into the other books, though. I'm not sure about Steph but I am kinda secretly hoping that since Snyder likes her, Cass will show up. It would be nice.

Do we know who the back-ups are? Because I had a dream where Devin Grayson was writing Steph-or-Cass. And either would definitely drag me back to giving my money to DC, despite the nauseating lack of Oracle.

Here's to hoping Scott writes Martha well anyway.

We have Tony Daniel and the current Spawn artist (can't remember or spell the name for the life of me) on Detective Comics, and we know Johns and Gary Frank are doing the Curse of Shazam or something like that over in Justice League as of issue 7. I think that's it so far, but undoubtedly, if these are a success, DC will try more. The backups do seem infinitely more thought-out than their previous attempts.

Snyder's been doing some great work from what I've seen, and seeing the involvement of the Wayne's Pre-Tom/Martha was cool, but I'm a little sick of implicating Bruce's parents in vast conspiracies. Let's have Alfred subtly pushing Gotham on the right tracks for a change. We all know he does anyway.

Well they are an old and rich family, having untoward goings on is to be expected. Frankly we should be glad that we only have Dr Hurt as the only out and out evil one thus far.

Snyder's already said that he won't be affecting the death of the Waynes by bringing in the Court of Owls. And also, it's hardly like Thomas and Martha were part of the Court - They seem untouched so far, which is a little different than actively having them targeted by people like Hurt and the mobster in Dini's final Streets of Gotham story.

I'm pretty sure Snyder has confirmed that Jason WILL be involved - I'd try to source that, but I'm feeling pretty ill and lazy right now.

In the past he's definitely said that he'd be excited to write Jason, anyway. One of the appealing things about him as a writer is that he seems to be fond of all the whole bat family, even the more peripheral characters.

This looks like a very nice and smart use of back-up stories. Instead of having the usual unrelated stories randomly printed at the end, something in the same tone from the same creative team, expanding the story of the current foes.

Nice!
