Last week, Marvel announced its plans to launch "AvX: Versus," a series set to run side-by-side with its event of the year, "Avengers Vs. X-Men." Now, the publisher has provided CBR News with an exclusive first look at artist Adi Granov's teaser for the highly-anticipated clash, featuring the Armored Avenger Iron Man tackling the Mutant Master of Magnetism: Magneto!

I really don't get why Tony is even picking this fight. I mean did he forget that Magneto is a genius in his field of electromagnetic studies? People have been trying for years to beat Mags at the Magnetism game and no one has ever succeeded.....this isn't going to be a fight its going to be a curb stomp.

Because he can?

I totally see Tony doing it just for the challenge.

If Fear Itself is still in continuity (I can never tell if something is supposed to be or not these days), Tony should have benefit of uru-coated armor that was enchanted by Odin to give him a fighting chance against malevolent gods operating on Thor's power level. I'd say that should change the balance of power between him and Magneto significantly.

Well all Tony needs..

Shouldn't this fight last about ten seconds? In Not a Hero, Mags kicked Iron Man's rubber butt up, down and sideways. Unless the writer totally jobs Magneto, this is gonna be one short fight. (The writer is totally gonna job Magneto.)

So "haha NON-FERROUS ARMOR" by page 3, "haHA magnetism!=ferrokinesis" by page 5, and "ha-HA! punch to the face while wearing my red-and-gold body condom" by page 8?

(If Tony's coming into this with planning, he should probably pick up a case of SPIN darts; neutralizing Magneto's powers these days'll send him into an instantaneous funk, it seems.)

Payback for Not a Hero? Tony will have come up with some scheme to neutralize Mags. It might even work. But as X-Men Legacy showed, even a depowered Mags is more than a match for most super-folks.

I have a feeling that..

..The very nature of these seemingly pointless matchups will of course mean that the underdog has to win.
i.e Iron Man will somehow inexplicitly win against Magneto, and even more impossibly Storm will somehow win against Thor..(Sigh!)

I really wanted to see Mags taking on Thor too..That's a fight that could really go the distance..

Storm and Thor are going to leave the fight to go on a date. Storm is going to win the date.

In Stark's favor: he's made (in at least one What If...?) comic anti-Magneto armor (with its own magnetic fields that "countered" his), and I think at least one of his Stealth Suits is made from non-metallic ceramic composites. Stark has resisted EMPs, when he had his Extremis and could directly interface with/'force reboot' his armor's systems, and since his suit's OS is in his mind now, an EMP may not do anything more to Stark's armor than it would to your or my own nervous system.

In Magneto's favor: Magneto gave Jean Grey a fatal stroke by channel a super-EMP into her brain (though most people don't talk about that). Also, his powers have been repeatedly shown to be more than just manipulating magnetic energy/ferrous metals. He's messed with blood (despite hemoglobin beings diamagnetic/repulsed by wither end of a magnet), he's warped light (part of the EM spectrum) to make himself invisible and focused it into a potent laser, and he's (somehow) used magnetism to open wormholes (manipulating gravity via magnetism = he is the Unified Field Theory?). And even if he can't directly affect Stark's armor, he can just lift stuff and throw it at him.

Though the last part would kinda depend on who sets the battleground. And in addition to "where" there's also "when," i.e., how much prep time does either have? Does Stark have enough time to whip up an Anti-Magneto device? Does Magneto have enough time to whip up an Anti-Stark device?

I think the current retcon is that that was Xorn pretending to be Mageneto, not the real deal.

And I think even Magneto would realise that straight-up murdering Avengers is not gonna help anything.

Maybe, if you're going to fight someone who controls all magnetism, building your defense strategy around a use of magnetism isn't a good idea.

My biggest beef has been that Magneto isn't called the master of magnetism just because of his power set. Mags is an amazing scientist and over the years many, many, many talented people have tried to beat him at the magnetism game and they have all failed. Magneto, on the fly, always figures out what their trick is and then counters it.

Its like trying to beat Beast or Mr. Sinister at genetic manipulation or Daredevil in a braille reading contest. Why would you do that to yourself?

Magneto is a genius supervillain. Stark is a genius superhero. Magneto might probably beat him if he focuses on his speciality... Only for Stark to pull some other widget out of some unrelated branch of physics and fry him.

Ya know, Iron Man had defenses against Magneto's powers as far back as West Coast Avengers. Dunno why he would have too much trouble here, especially considering his other passive weapons (sonics, flares, gas).

I know what plan I'd use if I was Tony.

Step 1) Cellphone in armor
Step 2) Call Thor

Well at least I can chalk Tony showing up in front of Magneto in rubber armor or whatever that was in Magneto: Not A Hero #1 as foreshadowing I guess? So far all the match-ups they've announced are ones people called happening - Thor v Storm, Iron Man v Magneto. It's probably too much to hope that they're at least interesting fights, but I will anyway. At the very least let the art be pretty.

Thor vs. Storm? Doesn't that fight end pretty quickly? He can do anything she can, over a wider scale with greater intensity (I don't think she could equal a stunt like this, for example), and is enormously strong and nigh-invulnerable in addition.
