Batman - Death Wish (Fanfilm)

The first part of what should be an ongoing fanfilm, featuring some rather nice takes on the Bat-Family.





Okay, now that is one sleek and sexy Nightwing, a cute little Robin, and a suitably gruff Batman, also a fun Selina, and a Cass whose mask actually works for me, still creepy, but less freaky looking than the sewn-up mouth thing which I always hated (and though I am far from an expert in such things, a rather attractive actress too)

And for legality, a cover which when I saw it even as a younger icon was thinking... "Wait? It dissolves the person but leaves the costume intact, wouldn't the other way round be much more fun?"

I enjoyed that, thanks for sharing. I imagine the Cass-centric plot had a lot to do with the writer resembling her, which is an excellent argument for why the more diverse heroes there are the better; it makes it more likely some creative type will identify with them and become inspired enough to do something.

I have to disagree on the her mask working though - it looks a little low tech for Batman and the lack of eyes really spoils it for me. I'd have either used a rubber mask (to match everyone else's) and incorporated sunglass lenses into it or gone for the fiberglass 'full shell' helmet ala the red hood & power rangers (which seemed to me what ale garza was depicting on his Batgirl run)

I think the facelessness of the mask works, it makes her unreadable, which I think was always the point. The simplicity works better for me than the sewn up mouth.

That film would have been great if all the acting weren't terrible. (Well, except Harley. Harley was pretty good.)

Given how unimpressed I was by Christian Bale's turn as Batman, this isn't that bad for me, besides sometimes, I'm just happy to ogle the eye-candy!

He's a bland Bruce Wayne and a genuinely hilariously bad Batman. Seriously, that attempt at deep gravelly voice? I giggle every time.

I just don't really warm to the Nolan movies at all, and Bale is just... there. His screen charisma is zero to me. When you sit there thinking how awesome Gary Oldman is, and how Michael Caine is at least earning his paycheque, and Morgan Freeman is twinkling as Morgan Freeman-ly as he can, and then we have Bale the Bland Wonder sucking the interest out of the room just by standing in it.

Glad it's not just me. I wasn't really happy with Heath Ledger either. He did a terrific acting job (which is even worse for Bale... when they're both on screen, Ledger is so present that I rarely notice Bale at all), but his version of the Joker is not what I have in mind when I think of the Joker. :/

My friends (who developed watching movies and tv shows to an art ;) ) don't read comics and can't understand why I of all people am not a big fan of the Nolan movies.

Didn't care for the acting, but the writing had some very witty moments. I liked that it was rooted deep in Batman Mythology. And hell, set and costume design was fantastic given that had to be ridiculously low budget given they can't earn a dime for it.

So overall: Good job guys. Didn't make me tingle the way Grayson did oh so long ago, but definitely interesting and thought out.

Hmm. Sounds more like Bruce than Cass. Although, what issues of BATGIRL delve into Cassandra's death wish? Does it stem from the first time David Cain made her kill someone, or something else?

I think it's death wish in the typical super-hero sense of acting in such a way that she doesn't appear to care about her own life to help others, though in her case, yes I think it's motivated by her intense desire to make up for the life she took.

There are several issues that do that. Gotham Knight #2 and whichever issues of Batgirl with the fight against Shiva, and the other fight against Shiva, and the training in between.

The text supports the idea that up until her second fight with Shiva, Cass has a death wish - made explicit in #23, The Talk between Barbara and Bruce on the subject, and then repeated during the second Shiva/Cass fight. (and previously touched upon in Gothal Knights #2, like salinea said.)

In the text, Barbara makes the connection between Cass being a killer and her devotion to the Mission (and I think Shiva does too). Cass does want to Save Everyone, which I think ties into the self-reproach part of the definition, as well.

I love stuff like this. A bit cheesy, yes, but very enjoyable. It's amazing how slick-looking these fan films are getting.

The acting was kind of bad but the film was enjoyable overall. I liked the costumes, even with the Bat-nipples. The actors moved really convincingly in them and they obviously knew a lot about Batman mythology.

Nightwing was the man.

The fight scenes were good too.

Also Cass is my favorite Bat heroine so it was nice to finally see her in a fanfilm! Her costume was good too, but her mask looked a bit out of place from the rest of her costume. I think the thin material looked too different from her thicker rubber suit.

I'd give is a B+ overall. I hope this crew makes a sequel.

You just know when the Batman voice is being forced. It sounds like such a strain on the guy's vocal cords.
