This was a pretty creepy issue, yes. The scene with Bruce and his parents...*shiver*

Yeah, I'm thinking a lot of the madness has to do with what he's found out and his lack of food--but I wouldn't be surprised if the Court didn't lace the water with something, just to speed the process on; especially with what we see in the second to last page.

lack of sleep, even two days, can make you hallucinate... of course the Goddamn Batman can go without sleep for a month but it can contribute here...

You know, I always thought that "thirty minute meditation" thing actually didn't work that well, contributing to the flip-flopping of crazy and/or dickish behavior. The "message from the future" test he did on Tim to make him paranoid of all his Bat-allies, and that Tim should have seen though immediately because "time travel isn't possible"? That was the result of several months of meditation with no actual sleep.

Bruce having a Black Swan moment there.

Still, despite what people are saying about this being a retread of the Black Glove storyline (which is both is and isn't), his breakdown here seems a bit less silly than the back up personality thing that Morrison introduced.

Not bashing RIP, it had its good bits, just that I think that some parts work better here.

"Bruce having a Black Swan moment there."

You know, I didn't notice that the owl characteristics were showing up that early until now. I just thought it started after Talon stabbed him--if that part is even real.

It should also be noted that this also a bit like Batman: The Cult, specifically in that Blackfire truly BROKE Batman, whereas in RIP he always had something hidden under his sleeve.

The thing is, it's not even a retread of the 'Black Glove' storyline. It's a generic 'villains are tormenting the hero' storyline - and the execution is, as always, where the quality comes into play. Morrison used it to further his 'Batman has a plan for everything' concept, which is true to his version and doesn't really hurt anything, and Snyder's got this, but it's hardly anything that started with RIP.

I mean, the Kevin Smith Guardian Devil story is pretty similar to RIP in that respect. Unseen foe is actively and constantly tormenting the hero? Check. Mental instability? Check.

Also yeah Bruce is a few fries short of a full Happy Meal here.

Good issue, though given that Batman has just come back from a year plus of being dead, I don't think eight days would faze most of his family (also a shame that we get only one panel, one freaking panel of Dick and Damian)

I don't know if I'd go that far, but Capullo does do her justice. Did you see his drawing of her he did recently for an art print?

The only thing that bothers me is what I've been noticing with how everyone's drawing her lately--the fact that when zipped up there's this strip of her neck flashing. It just looks weird, like Selina left her cowl in the washing machine for too long.

I greatly disagree with that, too. It's a slightly different take, but there really is a lot of character depth in the current ongoing.

From: [personal profile] darkknightjrk
I think even if you take away the Lola stuff there's still some depth there--her relationship with Batman alone shows that, not to mention her temper and her head having conflict with her impulse when it comes to her life of crime. This, in my opinion, is the most interesting, conflicted, strongest take on Selina since Brubaker, and while they're approached very differently, I think they're about equal in terms of depth.

And I'll say that just because shallowness is part of a character's trait doesn't mean that the handling of said character is shallow.

Shake?

Is it fleshtoned? In the post it appears to be a different fabric rather than skin, which makes sense, since a leather one-piece with a cowl would seriously restrict being able to turn your head.

I don't think so--it seriously looks like her cowl shrunk in the wash.

The pic in your post, yes, that looks like a shrunk cowl, but the in the main post, there seems to be no skin exposed.

Yeah--you KNOW shit's gotten real when it's forcing Damian to say "please." Loved when Gordon put his arm over him, a very sad/touching moment.

I love seeing cracks in Damian's "brat" armor, because it shows a very human boy under all that posturing.

I think it's the posturing that always tells me there's a very human boy there in the first place... if that makes sense.

He's ten. There's plenty of tough-guy kids his age who like to posture and make out that they're way bigger than they actually are. And it's generally a staple of fiction.

But I always like seeing more 'normal' stuff being done with Damien. Like the issue of Batgirl where Steph takes him to that amusement park at the end.

Snyder and Capullo are doing some incredible work here. And Snyder in particular has managed to put this book, in my mind, on the same level as his so-far-excellent SWAMP THING. I like that they're pushing limits so early into the run, and I LOVE they';re bringing a huge element of horror into the book. It works very well.

As much as I loved Dick and Damian together, something about Dick sitting back with a smug look as Damian pummels someone in the face, obviously hurting, doing his job without his father there, tells me in one panel how much the DCnU is different.

I saw something completely different in that panel. To me Dick looks businesslike rather than smug and Damian's not pummeling, he's threatening.

I do have to say, this is the way to do sympathetic Damian to me--much better than B&R.

Really agree. Damian had 3 panels and 2 lines in this issue and was far more sympathetic than he has been in the whole run of B&R since the reboot.

The owner of my LCS, when I went to pick up my books, said "Just FYI your Batman is not damaged!"

Apparently a few people didn't realize the pages were supposed to be flipped like that. It was pretty intuitive to me.

Oh yeah, I've heard people say that too. :) I'd have thought it was pretty obvious after they turned it on it's side first (the dimensions wouldn't work if it was portrait rather than landscape), I thought it was brilliant. :)
