Blue Beetle #5

Jaime uses all of his will to force the scarab to provide medical treatment for Paco to save his life. The scarab refuses but Jaime over powers it, which shocks the scarab that Jaime was able to do so. Moments later an ambulance comes by to take Paco to the hospital.

Brenda and her aunt stop by the hospital and Brenda starts crying into Jamie's arms, thinking she is responsible because she turned Paco down for a date. La Dama, meanwhile, wants to talk with Jaime. In private. At her house.

La Dama is devilish as she traps Jaime in a magic circle at her house, already deducing that he has her prize, the blue beetle idol. The scarab defends itself by throwing La Dama's henchman at her, disrupting the magic and blowing Jaime out of the house, followed by the house disappearing.

A hospitalized patient Paco has been turned into a scarab warrior.

My body is ready for the secondary Rider forced conflict and misunderstandings co-starring the River. Seriously the relaunched Blue Beetle just looks more and more Kamen Rider every day.

It lacks the heart of the Giffen/Rogers BB *and* my favorite Rider shows (Den-O, W, Fourze) though.

So far this book is very frustrating.

Agreed.

(..Except for the choice of favourites. :x!)

Well it's really more like the Inoue Rider series (Agito, Faiz, Kiva) in that it tries very hard to be serious and dark and ends up tripping over itself almost every step of the way. Hence why I referenced the "Misunderstandings, co-starring the River" meme from /m/.

Aha, three series I haven't watched! I started with OOO, then went back and watched Den-O and W.

W remains my favorite.

forgive my ignorance, but what does "Guest-starring the river" a reference to?

[personal profile] darkblade 2012-01-24 05:58 (UTC)(link)
A tendency in toku but especially prevalent in Inoue's Kamen Rider seasons for fights between protagonists to end with one character being thrown into a river and presumed dead by the other party.

I'm feeling a lot of Spiderman. The scarabs are like the symbiotes.

Considering that Bedard's explicitly compared La Dama to the Kingpin and Paco the Zabrak up there to Venom, that might be intentional.

Well that's disappointing.

Paco the Zabrak

I.... I can't not see it now.

Eh, I was thinking more "Guyver" then Kamen Rider, but seeing as how Guyver is a shout-out to shows like that anyway...

Also, does Jamie have a catch phrase when he Transforms? Because if not, then he totally should.

This seems like the comic version of the Walking Dead TV series.

The kind of thing that fans WANT to be good, but just isn't there yet. :(

Well not all fans; I for one actually enjoy the Walking Dead show more than the graphic novel.

Seriously, do these people just not GET why the previous BB series was so well-liked?

[personal profile] jlbarnett 2012-01-21 13:01 (UTC)(link)
they really don't.

Not well-liked enough to avoid cancellation (and multiple threats of it). So they are trying to 'spice' it up I guess. Not saying its working, but give it some time. Bedard's writing usually picks up.

[personal profile] jlbarnett 2012-01-21 20:21 (UTC)(link)
it took three years to get cancelled though? Pretty good for a new character many were prepared to dislike on principle.

It's sales were cancel-worthy for a long time, though. It just had good critical reviews and Didio was a fan, so it stayed despite being in the 10k range.

Just 'cause one spices it up, doesn't mean one should throw out the best-liked parts of the old one, though!

... And this is supposed to be an improvement over the original Jaime Reyes Blue Beetle?

In one word, BLEUGH.

I've got the entire Griffen/Sturges run on BB. I'm not even thinking about going near this one.

Nice post. Avoiding the controversy over the writing, I do like Ig Guara's art on this, except maybe Paco's armor. I liked him on Pet Avengers too.

This is all happening in a VERY compressed timeframe, we're probably at a point no more than 24 hours since Jaime got the scarab, and in that time he's gained it, argued with it, fought with it, used it to fight a couple of the Brotherhood of Evil's major powers and nearly killed a friend with it.

Yes, but it's taken 110 pages so far to get here, with no end in sight. I expect a certain amount of decompression these days, but I also expect the story to move forward in a meaningful way given the time invested.

Not to mention that the pre-reboot version of Jaime Reyes is just under five years old--we've seen the original origin in fairly recent memory.

Ooh Reach versus the Blue Lanterns and New Guardians should be fun. I guess DC wants to try to build up interest in the Reach and direct readers to Blue Beetle.
