Issue 4 of DEMON KNIGHTS gives us the origin of the Shining Knight...

Ystina the Shining Knight is having a vision of Merlin, in which he explains some things to her.

Long ago, Ystina was a squire at the fall of Camelot. Merlin found her dead/dying corpse and fed her from the Grail, granting her immortality and an eternal longing for the Grail. But having no memory of the encounte, she couldn't identify what her hunger was for.

Merlin tells her that she alone has a chance of recovering the Grail, some day in the distant future.

Reading this, I'm now even more disappointed that Cornell's leaving STORMWATCH, as it looks like it and DEMON KNIGHTS were meant to be two halves of a connected whole.

I'm not usually a great fan of swords & sorcery comics, but Demon Knights is amazing.

Same here--like, even some of the greats like LOTR were a massive chore to read. Outside of this, the only fantasy stuff I like is Conan and the Game of Thrones HBO series.

I am a fan of fantasy epics like LOTR but for some reason it doesn't usually work for me in comics, probably because a lot of it seems kind of half-formed or very repetitive. Then again, in movies it has to be LOTR or Game of Thrones level of detail and world-building for me to enjoy it, so maybe it's something about the visuals that throws me off.

I think part of why some of the popular stuff bores me but this kinda stuff works is that the traditional fantasy stuff just feels bland to me. Game of Thrones has the fantasy trappings, but has a grittier, dirtier tone and have some complex, FUCKED UP characters that you either love or love to hate. I think that's part of Demon Knight's charm as well--there's a lot of interesting, somewhat subversive character troupes here.

Agreed! (As I recall) both mention strange ageing, and it's correlation with the state of the world.

I'm so torn...I was sort of boycotting DC.

But this looks good. But nothing good lasts long....But it looks awesome...But DC kills everything I love...

If people don't buy the comics they love for fear of them being killed, they'll definitely be offed. Just keep boycotting all the bad books buy awesome stuff like this.

It's nice to get more of Ystina the Shining Knight after her brief introduction in Seven Soldiers (though have we seen her in the "present" DCU? I thought the reboot occurred before anything new had been done with her?)

She popped up as part of the Dark Side/fight arena stuff DC insisted on pushing in the run up to Final Crisis, as I recall. Maybe an appearance in Teen Titans around the same time.

I'm continually mourning him leaving SW, and his replacement is just salt in the wounds.

Demon Knights is so not my genre, but I absolutely love it. <3

I don't know, I think Jenkins is a fairly strong replacement, especially if it's just for a two-part story and they get someone else going forward.

Oh, he's just on for a two parter? That's reassuring.

Tbh, my entire objection to him is that I suspect anyone who picks a bunny girl for a villain isn't going to keep up the winning streak of great writing on the female characters. Though I haven't actual read any of his work, admittedly.

From: [personal profile] darkknightjrk
Yeah, right now we don't know who's going forward with it, though Jenkins has said he would like to keep going afterwards and Cornell's said he'd approve of it.

And honestly, the White Rabbit has been a fairly interesting villain so far. She's doing this intricate plot and part of the mystery is finding out who she is.

Good chance it'll be Jenkins then, I suppose. Could be a lot worse.

And fair enough, but couldn't she have been just as interesting without being an object of fetishisation? (Though I suppose he may have specified 'white rabbit' rather than 'bunny girl' and that's just what the character designer came up with...)

Date: 2012-01-23 03:42 pm (UTC)

Well, it is David Finch drawing it. But it is definitely meant to be the "White Rabbit." She's playing a whole lot of different sides, and no one's caught her yet.

I've got mixed feelings. The layout is great and I can tell the pencilling was good, but I hate the inking and colouring - the inking looks hesitant and amateurish, and the colouring has that nasty muddy flatness that I loathed about the artwork in Larocca's run on Iron Man (though I think that was pretty much a fail across the board).

*has too many feelings about comics art*

Oh sure, they throw the Holy Grail in the volcano, but the One Ring? Oh lets keep that.

You know, Sometimes I think fantasy kingdoms deserve to be conquered by evil if they're this stupid.

Wait a minute... Ystina was a squire at the fall of a Camelot that fell 9000+ years ago, according to a page not shown. That means the Grail had its powers 7000+ years before the drinking/blood-spilling event that gave it its powers? Unless the referred to 'our lord' is not the one we're thinking of, or they've had multiple resurrections of that person, just like this comic's timeline has had multiple Camelots...

From what I'm understanding, Cornell's basically given Ystina a new origin that takes out Seven Soldiers' take.

Yeah, I believe that's the idea. Morrison's "recurring Camelot" concept was somewhat of a reference to how there were suspiciously similar legends to King Arthur/Excalibur in other cultures long before it like in Celtic and Norse myths (likely because the nature of folklore is that they tend to grow from pre-existing stories).

I think Cornell is applying the same concept to the Christ myth, in reference to how Jesus of Nazareth is a derivative archetype that borrows a lot of story elements from older "savior" figures in Egyptian and Greek myths.
