Merlin Watches the Storm

Issue 4 of DEMON KNIGHTS gives us the origin of the Shining Knight...
Ystina the Shining Knight is having a vision of Merlin, in which he explains some things to her.
Long ago, Ystina was a squire at the fall of Camelot. Merlin found her dead/dying corpse and fed her from the Grail, granting her immortality and an eternal longing for the Grail. But having no memory of the encounte, she couldn't identify what her hunger was for.
Merlin tells her that she alone has a chance of recovering the Grail, some day in the distant future.
Reading this, I'm now even more disappointed that Cornell's leaving STORMWATCH, as it looks like it and DEMON KNIGHTS were meant to be two halves of a connected whole.

Demon Knights is so not my genre, but I absolutely love it. <3

Date: 2012-01-23 12:47 pm (UTC)Tbh, my entire objection to him is that I suspect anyone who picks a bunny girl for a villain isn't going to keep up the winning streak of great writing on the female characters. Though I haven't actual read any of his work, admittedly.

Date: 2012-01-23 03:34 pm (UTC)And fair enough, but couldn't she have been just as interesting without being an object of fetishisation? (Though I suppose he may have specified 'white rabbit' rather than 'bunny girl' and that's just what the character designer came up with...)

Date: 2012-01-23 05:07 pm (UTC)I think Cornell is applying the same concept to the Christ myth, in reference to how Jesus of Nazareth is a derivative archetype that borrows a lot of story elements from older "savior" figures in Egyptian and Greek myths.
