A little nit picky... the Phoenix has been on earth SEVERAL times since the Dark Phoenix Saga.... Wolverine saying that Jean killed herself... wasn't that a Phoenix/Jean clone...? Wolverine of all people should know that...

the last few times the phoenix has been on earth it has been an Ally....

also Tony and Steven seem to know next to NOTHING about the Phoenix....

hell honestly Scott's Idea seems the smartest...

Yeah, this does seem to almost completely invalidate everything that happened after the Dark Phoenix Saga--which annoys me because frankly, from what I've seen, Morrison's Jean was the BEST Jean.

It's a vague and confusing situation. The Phoenix/Jean-construct believed completely that it was Jean Grey when it killed herself in X-Men 137, so to all intents and purposes it WAS Jean that committed suicide, as it was a perfect replica of her memories and emotions which made that choice.

The Phoenix was sort of an abstract entity, a cosmic being who was the embodiment of all life. It was neither good nor evil until it bonded with Jean Grey out of curiosity and then went insane when it couldn't cope with having a human psyche linked to all that power. Dark Phoenix would never have happened if it hadn't turned itself into Jean Grey.

Arguably the returned Jean Grey has never been the same Phoenix, Jean has been a human psionic whose powers have increased exponentially, and become a sort of cosmically empowered being, but that's not the same as being the "Avatar of Life" that had existed since near the dawn of the universe and which had become Jean, or which Rachel linked with.

During Morrison's run didn't Jean Bond once again with the Phoenix Force? and during Endsong, it was again the Phoneix Force?

in both stories, it was reaffirmed that Jean Grey was the vessel for the Avatar of Life. The Phoenix Force's perfect host. when she first encountered it, neither she, nor the phoenix force were prepared for it.

It's the reason the Phoenix force bonded with Rachel, because it sensed that she and Jean were family. its also the reason the Shiar killed the Grey line, because they had the greatest potential of being possible phoenix hosts.

Jean grey as the Ultimate/Perfect host for the Phoenix is what marvel has been toting for the longest time....

Scott's idea to give the Galaxy destroying Force of Nature to the out of control hormonal teenage girl who doesn't even listen to Scott now is the smartest?

Five minutes ago she took control of her "friend's" body and forced him to absorb a couple of dissidents into his own body against his will, just to prove a point to Scott.

they aren't going to GIVE the Phoenix to Hope... they want to train Hope mind and Body to be PREPARED for the Phoenix. Because the Phoenix is coming, and most likely its coming for her. they want to prepare her for it (which honestly they should have been doing since day one)

Uh, I hate to be THAT guy, but why aren't they talking to the Shi'ar or some of the people who ran the Weapon Plus program? You know, folks who actually have the technology to contain the Phoenix?

The Shi'Ar empire is probably a mess right now. They lost the war with the Kree and became subjugated by them. And with the Inhumans no longer leading the Kree, who knows what's going on with the Shi'Ar these days.

Weapon Plus wouldn't have much information about the Phoenix Force as the Weapon XIV/Stepford Cuckoos weren't intended for that role. It was just a nice coincident that it happened.

Ever since I quit DC, I kind of wanted to get more into Marvel, but honestly, nothing about this interests me. Oh, look, the superheroes are fighting again! Oh, look, we'll mess up Jean's backstory some more but still won't bring her back!

...I just can't bring myself to care.

and that is why i am wary of Marvel... the only thing from there on my pull is Avengers Academy. and soon Astonishing (can't wait for that).... though i have been toying with X-Club... the starfish nearly sold me on it :D and do pick up Avengers Children's Crusade... the rest of marvel is "Eh..." the only part of the universe i peak in on is the x-men, they are the only ones that have beena ble to keep my nominal (mmm nom) interest at all.

Man, that is some awful stage direction on the first Utopia page. Emma, Magneto, Namor, and Colossus doing a literal Greek chorus number for Scott does not work, and the fact that the dialogue is trying to do that as well only makes it more cringe-worthy.

I love Greek tragedies and I love these characters, but that scene just isn't working for me. It's too blatant and in-your-face.

Actually Namor sounded liked the smartest here.

While Tony and Steve haven't much interaction with the Phoenix Force, they know people who have. I'm sure there is files on it they can read about, namely from Beast or Tony might have been told by Professor X during the Illuminati period.

Both Tony and Steve are going off by what Nova Corps member saw in Point One. Which was the Phoenix Force wipe out an entire civilization sparing no one. So what they are doing is sound choice, based on the information at hand. It's still not the best course of action they could take, but hey they just got told that something to killed an entire planet is heading their way.

As it is Steve is there in person to talk to the X-Men. He's not doing it by video feed or phone, he is doing it in person. Which is a good move on his part.

While Cyclops is trying to rationalize Phoenix coming to Earth as something that will benefit mutants. The Phoenix is a cosmic entity, it has it's own mind and ideas, and just because the Phoenix is about death and rebirth does not mean that the X-Men and everyone will come back for the rebirth phase. After for the planet the Phoenix destroyed the only rebirth shown so far was a single plant. So Scott really has to consider the fact that during the rebirth phase everything might change. I think Namor and Magneto are being smart here questioning Scott on his logic here.

The thing is, the Avengers have ties to allies that have experience communicating with cosmic forces - the Silver Surfer and Dr. Strange (both now teamed up again in the Defenders, with Namor, I might add). Seems like the smart move would be having one of them try to sound out the Phoenix itself about its intentions first rather than immediately jump to "let's make battle plans to kill the teenager it might be about to possess, just in case! RARRRRR!"

You know honestly the reason I don't want to read X-Men comics is because when I watched the cartoons I really liked Scott but every single scan I see of him is him being a jerk/stupid/otherwise uninteresting.

And in something actually related: I am cracking up at the wings on Cap's cowl for some reason, they look so...tiny and fluttery.

So... I have to assume there's a reason they're ignoring A) The "That was was The Phoenix, not Jean" thing and B) Rachel's direct experience as avatar for the Phoenix Force..

I mean, it's not like they could ignore major chunks of continuity (especially when one of those "chunks" is a current X-Man) and not cripple the story from the start, right?

And I also have to assume that Cap and Tony are of the "Do whatever it takes to keep the threat from taking root" mindset? Isn't that what they fought against the X-Men the last time for, on behalf of Wanda?

I do not have high hopes for this story.

I really hope they clarify the continuity issues ASAP. This preview really gives the impression that everything post DPS is being ignored, if that is not the case I really wish they would come out and say it so I could actually try to enjoy the non-Bendis issues of this series.

I just want this arc to be over to see what messed up thing the Phoenix will do again, see how Jean will come back all mess'd up and set up the new mission for the X-Men to overcome, and see how Scott will ruin Hope...
