I would've been so much more interested in this if they'd actually kept the lead alien as Maxima. That, frankly, would've been a change for the better, since I could never really buy that there's what, four or so alien races in the DCU that basically look human.

Green Lantern has a lot more species than that.

Well, *obviously*. But there's still Kryptonians, Daxamites, Maxima's race and probably a few others from the old DCU. Why would any of them look human? Kryptonians, I'll give a free pass to (for whatever reason), but otherwise, it's not like comics have the same problem as say, Star Trek: TOS, where they only had the budget to glue on some horns.

It just strikes me as really fucking bizarre that aliens would look just like us. Which is why I liked the Maxima redesign before DC chickened out; Even if they kept the 'bed Superman' objective for her, it'd be made more interesting, frankly. That's not to say I'm knocking Perez's original design for her (if I remember rightly), but still. I thought it was a bold choice to change Maxima to a distinctly looking alien design.

And yet the fans, once again, have that frankly bizarre mindset in place; "We want change and new stuff but make sure you don't change things too much otherwise we won't like it".

Was there some sort of Maxima redesign I haven't heard about? Afaik she used to look totally human.

The Worldkiller in green with red hair (reminiscent of old-school Maxima) was originally meant to BE the DCnU Maxima, when issue 5 was solicited. A good portion of the fans didn't respond so well, and for one reason or another, DC changed it up.

Oh, you meant she's not Maxima! I saw those solicits too and was just assuming she still was, I get it now.

The red-haired, white-skinned non-human design up there was first revealed as Maxima. It then seems, however, that DC decided to use that design as a different character instead so, lacking any other news, Maxima hasn't changed/isn't in the DCNu/whatever.

Daxam was a colony of Krypton, so is covered by the same pass.

The number of human looking aliens in the Legion's era was was established post-Zero Hour as being because most of them WERE humans. A Dominator genetic experimentation camp, where they messed with the metagene resulted in groups of many humans enhanced with similar abilities who decided to make a new world elsewhere since they felt they couldn't go home, and Valor was the one to ensure they for their safely. Hence the likes of Trom, Imsk, Braal and Tharr were seeded with these modified humans, and populated them.

It honestly never really bothers me. Especially when they're from an Earthlike planet. Why shpuld they look like us? Why shouldn't they?

Judging by the scans here, this character literally has nothing in common with Maxima other than being female. If they had made her Maxima, she'd be Maxima in name only. What purpose would that serve, other than to keep a name in circulation?

If editorial severely changed the character's dialogue along with the decision to call her something other than Maxima, then frankly, how can we tell what this new Maxima would've been like?

Not even sure that makes sense, but the character was originally solicited as being Maxima. The character has the red/green motif associated with Maxima's usual red hair/green costume design. Again, we know what DC editorial is like, these days - They could've changed the character's dialogue and purpose entirely. So just because the finished product doesn't entirely resemble Maxima, that just means DC did a halfway decent job rejigging the character from the time between Supergirl #5 being solicited and being released.

I'm kinda sad the "Superman"-like costume became something standard for Krypton, and not Kal-El's original idea of a superhero suit. (Kara appeared on Earth with that suit from the go!)

Grumbling about Maxima aside... Did they basically just state that Kara's basically the most powerful person on Earth? Because I have to admit that's pretty awesome, really.

It isn't the first time this was done, actually--when Loeb/Turner brought her back, she was in suspended animation for centuries, soaking in more solar radiation than Superman has in his entire lifespan, which made her even stronger.

I thought that also came with the stipulation that Clark was actually stronger, he was just holding back because of his age and maturity?

yeah i lilke when they do stuff like that. i know one of the things they are doing with this series is giving Supergirl some different powers than superman along with the normal kryptonian powers.

That's hardly new, Matrix-Supergirl had different powers too, and of course, so did Kon (and I remember suggetsing when the new Nightwing and Flamebird showed up that tactile TK might well be a standard Kryptonian power manifestation, just one that Kal never exhibited in that way, but another member of his family might)

She may be the strongest, but given the number of people with REALLY exotic abilities, never mind magical powers, I'm not sure I buy that.

I'd say any Green Lantern on earth has a good case for being more powerful than Superman at least in terms of scope if not spot intensity, and if DCnu has a Dr. Fate or Spectre those characters traditionally are orders of magnitude mightier. (Though of course they might be completely unknown to aliens.)

I still wish they'd go with Power Girl being the most physically powerful hero, with pre-Crisis Earth-2 Kryptonian powers.

Alas, he's too busy stuck being angsty, in a battle of wills against the scarab, and inadvertently terrifying his family and friends. And he's getting no outside support as the scarab won't let him tell anyone it's him inside the suit.
