The London Super Comics Convention was the first comic convention I've attended in many, many years, and aside from the Stan Lee panel appearance (Where he proved he can still work a room like few others, even if the less than ideal acoustics meant that every question had to be repeated to him by the chap sitting next to him) Artists Alley was the place I'd be found.

A side note before continuing, the place the Convention was being held at was not only having a "Mother and Baby" exhibition in the hall opposite (which led to a lot of very strange mutual glances conveying multiple levels of social communication), but one of the other halls had a "Zumba Instructors" conference, which involved more dayglo (in both Lycra and something akin to parachute pants) than I have ever seen in one place in one time. When people cosplaying as Superheroes (and all praise to those who did, you were awesome!) are NOT the most garishly dressed people in the conference centre, the worlds has gone MAD!)

And what a rich assortment of talent there was, from Bernie Wrightson, to Simon Bigley, from Brian Bolland to Paul Cornell (Who discovered that his dedication to enhancing female contribution to panels was sort of short-circuited when he was dropped from a panel he had been going to attend)

And so, on with the show!

Jackademus is a UK based professional artist and animator who cheerfully professes that Robin is his favourite character... and based on this piece, I'll be doing business with him again! :)

George Perez

What more can be said about George Perez, the man, the legend, the sketching bloody MACHINE! This was my first chance to actually meet Mr Perez and he was as warm and charming as every story you've ever heard about him says he is.

Not my most imaginative request perhaps, but I was lucky to get into his sketch list at all and this is now MY Geroge Perez convention sketch. :)

His sketch list was long... very, very long, but the queue was longer, and he was producing quality sketch work every single time. It was an astonishing experience to watch the creative process in action.

Phil Jimenez

It's impossible to express what a trouper Mr Jimenez was. He was sketching and signing every moment he wasn't on a panel, or being interviewed, and though his queue was long, not a single person who got a sketch begrudged a moment of the time taken, because the quality is breathtaking. (Honestly, classing this as a "Convention Sketch" whilst literally accurate, feels disrespectful somehow)

Grant Perkins has a wonderful unique style that caught my eye as soon as I saw it, I keep thinking "It's a bit like..." some artist or other, but it's not quite, so it's definitely his own.

He earned my respect by referring to "the best Batman movie ever" in conversation and assuming that everyone would know he meant the Adam West/Burt Ward one from 1967! That's my kind of mindset!

This is his take on the Boy Wonder!

And he also earned my respect by not even asking "Who?" when I mentioned Warlock and Cypher, but instantly expounding on how such a subtle power as Cypher's had had such potential.

And he jumped at the chance to draw a headshot of them. Wasn't sure how that was going to work, but this is wonderful! (My scanner does not do this true justice!)

Dave Stokes - is a terrific artist, with a serious love of the Legion, so how could I resist!...

And then AFTER that I found out that Nightcrawler was his favourite EVER character, so I think it's safe to say that we'll be doing a little more business in the future too!

I confess I'd forgotten the sheer cameraderie inherent in geeks in a non-hostile (or non-apathetic) environment, chats with strangers in queues where you DON'T need to explain your references, or justify your weird interests, because they are probably only slightly different from themselves. It was most refreshing!

And love my other pieces though I do, and you KNOW I love my art, I think I might just give the edge of "Most fun piece" to this piece by Jamal Igle, a delightfully cheerful chap, which is just so damned perfect. Nightwing, in a little light tying up.

Look at that expression, it's like he's DARING you to take advantage, and quite confident that he will be able to take down anyone who even tries with BOTH hands tied behind his back. And the bound wrists just pull your vision down to that ass! What criminal could resist? :D

So thank you to all the artists who contributed to my collection (and there's at least one more to come from a creator who's inks ran dry before his commission list did)

And for legality, a Nightwing cover that I now also have a nice signed print of.

I do adore your taste in artists, have I mentioned this?

And SO MUCH envy over getting a sketch from Jack!

Thank you, and I'd LOVE more from Jack, he would do, I feel, a wonderful Dick/Kurt piece.

Honest to God, I didn't!

I asked for a little light tying up, and the notion of the rear view (if you'll pardon the expression) and him looking over his shoulder was all Jamal's!

Just because he chose to draw a sleek and sexy Nightwing with his hands bound giving a "Come hither" look (albeit it modulated by a "Come hither so I can kick YOUR arse" vibe)... hmmm, I see what you mean! :)

Didn't he used to post here back in the live journal days? Or was that the old newsarama boards?

Anyway beautiful convention collection, that Cyphlock head shot is just perfect.

I don't recall Mr Igle ever posting on s_d, but that doesn't mean he didn't of course! :)

And total agreement on the Doug/Lock head shot. I'd seen Grant do a couple of others (including the Robin for me) so I thought I was in safe hands to ask for it, then wander away to do something else, and when I came back, I had that momentary lack of sureness about what I might have ended up with, but as soon as I saw it I knew THIS was a guy who knew his New Mutants, because he just captured it so simply and beautifully.

It was my first comic con (er, well, I went to MCM last year but that hardly counts) and I'm really glad I went. There were obviously some teething troubles with the organisation - apart from the acoustic problems you mention the - the queueing system for the badge-pick area meant they were only going at about half the throughput that they could have given the number of staff, leading to a backlog that went out of the front door. But still, fun.

Although Cornell didn't have a chance to not attend a panel, someone did do exactly that on the first panel, and everyone I spoke to agreed that worked very well.

Indeed, it was fun, but the organisation was a little annoying. They pulled Phil from sketching at his desk where there was a long queue, to do the exact same thing on the other side of the hall, and then back again, and he pretty much was left to do all the explaining as to what was happening, when that should be the Staff's job. (If a bunch of us hadn't gotten together to sort out a numbering system between us, it would have been even more complicated)

The on Sunday it was sometimes impossible to even see a Staff member.

I was there too, and have commissioned a sketch of DOOM from J. K. Woodward. But your haul is sublime! I love the Jimenez Robin especially, though the Stokes!Grell Cosmic Boy is lovely too.

Thanks! I got the last slot on JK's list, but his the one I'm having sent to me because he ran out of ink before he got to it! I saw some of the stack of sketches he had done and I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing mine because they were fantastic! :)

(I also adored the DW/ST cover he had in his folder, which is split down the middle of the page with Borg on one side and Cybermen on the other)

I can't help but comment over here, too! ;)

All great stuff, and the 'Come Hither' Nightwing is delicious! Also, the Nightwing cover epitomizes Dick: athletic, graceful, daring, and joyful. :)

Good stuff, good stuff. Sounds like you had a hell of a lot more fun than I did this weekend anyway.

But seriously, you'd really never met George Perez in person before?! I bet he knew who you were after you two started talking though, right? ;)

I've never been to a comics convention before. I think my guy would probably be interested, but... I don't think I'd feel that sense of camaraderie you describe. I generally don't have that much in common with my fellow geeks.

Hope your weekend wasn't TOO bad.

George hasn't been to the UK in a long, long time, so no, never had a chance to meet him before. And he didn't have a chance to do much talking (and the staff member, though charming, was doing a fairly good job of running interference so he wasn't distracted from his 100+ long sketch list.

And you never know, your fellow geeks may pleasantly surprise you... :)

Hope your weekend wasn't TOO bad.

What can I say - it was mental but in the literal sense, and not in the good way.

I just thought that George may remember you from such things as many many bound-and-gagged Robin commissions. :P

My fellow geeks often do pleasantly surprise me, usually when they are stealth geeks like me. I'm not a particularly judgmental person, but I do find something offputting about people who invest a *great* deal in a geek identity - they can be sort of vicariously embarrassing.

I don't know, maybe I have internalised geek shame, and I just want everyone to live in the geek closet like I do.

Perhaps I need to embrace geek pride!
