This whole mini could have been about Cap and Bats and I would only have loved it more. Here's their first encounter, and when they go hang at the Batcave (and meet Ben Grimm!) :

Okay, so the backstory is the that the Gamemaster and Krona have pitted the JLA and the Avengers against each other to satisfy a bet. After the JLA do some reconnaissance in the 616, the Avengers return the favor and show up in Metropolis. It isn't long before the two teams start doing what most teams do in crossovers: punching first and asking questions later...
.

Shit just got real.

While the others continue with the game, Batman and Cap slip away. We see them next at the Batcave, where Cap makes an interesting observation....

So much potential for Dead Partner Angst. Wish there could have been more. But moving on....

There needs to be more stories about Batman and Cap riding around on inter-dimensional bikes. I would read a whole series based on that premise.

I can't find the photomanipped scan of the page which did the rounds after a couple of characters returned;

Cap - "You... lost a partner?"

Batman - "No"

Cap - "Me neither"

I love that "fight" scene, worthy of both of them.

That one was great! Though I think in a somewhat joking way Batman said NOPE! in the manipped version instead of just no.

Why, how else is he going to say it? He's admitting that Cap is a viable threat (He uses "could", not "might"), which is quite a compliment in an of itself.

"It looks like we're evenly matched."

"Wanna go try to find out what's going on here?"

I dunno, the whole way it's phrased seems massively dismissive. "Could conceivably" seems less like a compliment and more like a long shot. "Your cat could conceivably drive you to the hospital, but why don't you just call an ambulance?"

To me, it comes off like Batman is doing his whole better-than-everyone thing again.

If Batman and Cap were friends, then yes, I can see him using either of those lines, but they're not.

At best, as far as they know, they might be cautious allies. In such a situation Batman isn't going to give an inch, nor would I expect Cap to do so either. Batman's comment is as much a warning about wasting time in pointless fighting as anything else.

I would like to point out that the "beat" is stressed instead of the "could".

Ah, I remember the massive flamewar that erupted at a Marvel Super Heroes RPG site over this scene when it first came out. (No surprise, given that a few of the regulars there were of the "Marvel > DC in all things at all times" mindset.) A shame such things popped up over such awesome stories.

I've heard the real-world thoughts behind the scene was that Busiek & Perez both decided Cap would win, but it would take forever, and the characters were smart enough not to try. No idea if that's true or not, but it sounds perfectly plausible.

I did love this, as I unabashedly love JLA/Avengers. But I really love how they got along in John Byrne's Cap/Batman crossover, the one set in WW2.

Dear DC/Marvel,
I need a Captain America/Batman book and I need it now. I'd recommend Ed Brubaker writes the book. If you want to throw interdimensional bikes then I'd also recommend Grant Morrison and/or Jonathan Hickman.
That is all.

You should post the scene where Batman and Cap infiltrate the Grandmaster's lair, and we see all those cosmic level games.

And then Batman comments he's fought guys like Grandmaster, but not on his scale.

Clearly I've been here too long given that battle line was misread by me.

Their blows land with almost no force. At first. A tap. A brush. They test. Asses.

Ok honestly that fight between Batman and Cap, even though it was brief, it's more awesome than the fight in Marvel vs. DC. I like well choreographed fights like that. Not to mention that it's just them feeling each other out and then talking. That just made it more awesome.

The one in Byrne's Captain America/Batman team up is also cute where Steve Rodgers fights Bruce Wayne and both quickly realise that there's almost no-one elese on the planet who knows the moves the other is using and deduce each other's ID's from that.

I'm not ashamed to admit that when I got these issues and saw the posters and potential stories if they had JLA/Avengers crossovers dating back to the 1960s I wept at the possibilities of what could have been.

I'm still waiting for Kurt, Roy Thomas, George Perez and Jerry Ordway to give us JSA/Invaders.

Showing me this...you're just making nostalgic to the ol' pre-New 52 costumes you know? Specially when drawn beautifully like this by George Perez!!

That fight scene is and of itself a brilliant piece of work. The rest of the comic lives up to it. Busiek knows his characters and his lore and Perez loves to draw lots of characters.

That the villians are ramping up the characters animosity to each other is part of this, of course. I like that after this, Batman makes a disparaging remark about Ben Grimm and Cap tells him to STEP BACK, Ben Grimm is the Real Deal.

*drools*

Man, I really, really need to get this! I remember seeing a trade but I wasn't into the Avengers then. Just to clarify, there's more than one crossover?

I don't know why, but Cap and Bats deliberately pulling their punches/hits is just so much hotter than full out fighting somehow. ^_^ And Cap calling Oracle 'Ma'am' is so squee-worthy!

Oh god, I just thought... if Cap and Jim Gordon ever crossed paths I think I would spontaneously combust!!!
