This book ended pretty quick. Darkseid is still Jobberseid it seems. The guy gets his butt kicked by everyone. Why not make him a threat on the scale of Galactus or something rather than just slightly stronger than Superman? For an ultimate big bad and the god of tyranny he is not that impressive all things considered.

As for Pandora and the Phantom Stranger, they are awesome. I liked her magic gun. Throw in a reference to the Spectre and things heat up.

i wonder what is the Circle of Eternity? Was it an old DCU thing?

Yeah. The guy's last story was Morrison's attempt to put Darkseid back on a pedestal where you clearly didn't fuck with him unless you were ready to die. Here, it's the exact same thing that Morrison was trying to move Darkseid away from. The guy just gets punched into submission? Fuck that!

I want the guy whose freaky, Kirby-style essence appears behind him to scare the shit out of people, not this armour wearing chump.

from what I've heard Kirby's Darkseid was going to be a fraud.

And frankly I've never cared for the character or concept so I say job him out till he's the guy the new villain takes out to establish how badass he is.

And frankly, that's a lazy, lazy attitude to a character, even if you don't like him. I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but even if Darkseid jobbed to everyone, there'd be zero effectiveness to him jobbing to a new villain afterward.

He seems so badass and overpowering and holds him self above everything, but overall he's weak. You fight him on his terms, he goes down and he'll beg for mercy

Have you read anything from Kirby's original New Gods at all?

No, he's really not weak. The guy's stronger than Superman, commands more loyalty than nearly anyone, and faced his own death head on. He never begged for mercy, and he literally IS above everything.

Just because about twenty years of crap writers relegated him to the status of someone Superman can punch into submission, doesn't mean he's not maybe the third greatest villain DC has given the right spin, behind Luthor and Joker.

I don't think he is. I think he should be someone Superman can punch into submission. In fact no matter how tough he is I think the biggest difficulty with defeating Darkseid is that he ends the battle when he's in trouble.

And did he face his own death head on when written by Kirby?

And the thing is....by having Darkseid clearly lose/get the shit beat out of him...it makes him look like a really stupid asshole for COMING BACK (and we all know he's coming back) to Earth....

this in my opinion (credited to a poster named Sigma7 on Mightygodking's blog) is how Darkseid should be used:

"Darkseid is not an issue #1 villain. Darkseid is a mortally-terrifying force of undeniable, implacable evil. You need the assembled force of the entire Legion as well as a resurrected Highfather, a restored Orion, and three billion superpowered Daxamites to force him to a stalemate, and then you collect your wounded and call yourself lucky and pray he never comes back. Going to Darkseid right off the bat is not the result of a deluge of new, breathtaking ideas."

I definitely agree with that. I've never read the Great Darkness Saga, but that does sound suitably epic. Again, though, my personal favourite story with the character is Final Crisis - The only reason the guy even loses there is because he's on the cusp of death anyway.
