Thats actually really interesting position for superhero. Buddy is such popculture icon and yet, as superhero he is so B-list, that he can't contact any member of the Justice League.

My view is that he's the superhero equivalent of Brian Blessed.

Everyone know who he is, everything thinks he's awesome and he's done a lot of impressive stuff in his time (Brian walked to the North Pole and climbed a third of the way up Everest three times, for example).

But despite this, neither are really going to be appearing in any big events or movies in a starring role, when they could have Anthony Hopkins or Superman instead.

"Oh look, he saved us!"
"Who was he?"
"You know, that--that guy!"

Buddy is a "that guy" of superheroes.

So at this point his identity was public knowledge?

I don't think his identity was ever that big a secret, it's just that most people didn't care, or viewed "B-list hero" as being no big deal.

That's been a mainstay look of Cliffy's for a long, long time. He had that ugly thing in Morrison's run, too.

Yes, but Morrison's run started in _1988_. We all had bad haircuts then.

(I had one of those short spiky cuts that made my head look like a bed of nails :)).

Lemire´s Animal Man is a direct descendant of Morrison´s run on Vertigo. Lemire is good as that.

Actually by way of Jamie Delano and, as it happens, Steve Pugh. They invented the Red. Morrison's was more a metafictional superhero comic. Jamie and Steve's was more like this.

I didnt know that as I just read the Morrison run and nothing else, I assumed the Red had always been there together with the Green.

Morrison always dig on the human side of Buddy, even his surroundings felt familiar, the take on Buddy that Lemire has feels like that, like home. Of course is more epic and stuff but remembers of the first time I picked up Morrison´s Animal Man.

It makes you feel "this is It, this is good!" a confidence that you are reading something meaninful, you dont get that from the other Dark series as cool as some of them may be.

Back when Morrison's run was coming out it was fashionable.

Now it just makes the kid look like a weirdo.

I can promise you it wasn't fashionable by the time Animal Man appeared. I was there. God help me, I was THERE.

?? No. (Well, 6 didn't follow directly on 5 nor 7 on 6, but the couple hours between don't really count as what I'd call a time skip...) Why do you ask?

Oh, just that I thought his son was a lot longer, and I thought his daughter was going to be Animalwoman/girl... and the girl on the cover looks a lot older than her.

I've not been reading it, so I don't really know. :)

Ahah...the cover...explaining that's a bit spoily...but it's not a time skip.

If you want to know, go ahead and ask and I (or someone else if they get to it before me)'ll post it in invisitext.

(Is 'longer' a typo for 'younger'? If so, no, Cliff's always been a teenager. If not, I'm not sure what you mean by that sentence. >_>)

Righty! Spoilers ahoy:

Near the end of the issue, Buddy has a (presumably) prophetic dream of what the future will be like if he fails in his job of protecting and training Maxine. She (as an adult, or at least older teen) is shown fighting against the Rot (along with Swamp Thing, and a pair of older folks I assume are John Constantine and Ellen), and being killed by one of them because she wasn't as good as she should have been, due to Buddy's failure. Then he wakes up, and sees Maxine, who is still 4 years old, who tells him the bad guys are here. And they are. Cue cliffhanger issue ending.

MY MAN STEVE PUGH IS BACK. Though I will miss the extremely stark weirdness of Foreman. Which I've never really seen anything like.

But now, maybe, will DC reprint Pugh and Jamie Delano's run? Because for one thing, it's, like, the ENTIRE BASIS of Lemire's. It was Jamie that came up with the Red. And Lemire openly acknowledges this and has himself called for that to be collected. It's a shame. But DC is always so slow to reprint Jamie. Look how long it took them to do a decent set of HELLBLAZER books.

And one very interesting thing in this issue is how well Steve Pugh segues his style from the first few pages by Foreman. He gives the images a taste of the same kind of vibe and slowly transitions to this. I actually got to ask him if that was deliberate and in fact it was--he didn't want to disrespect Foreman's work by too jarring a change right away.
