Avengers Academy #27

So this came out this week and as many might know featured the Runaways and the Avengers Academy kids meeting up. Lullz assuredly did ensue. So here's three pages of interest, though the first two are actually going further into Striker since his coming out a few issues ago.


 

See. this was the first page of the issue and I was already trying to contain my laughter. Striker's pace indeed!



I've now begun to like Striker. He's definitely not thinking a lot of this through but can't help but find it hilarious including his mom apparently not caring whether he's gay or not (granted she likely sees it as a media opportunity much like he does). And yeah this is what Striker would do given he loves the media.

Now as many might've seen in the preview of the issue like usual the Runaways and Avengers Academy students fought but here's an amusing page of after the dust settles and the teams interact, slowly.

 

Tigra is indeed fighting dirty. Molly and Klara playing with William. XD

That's only the tip of the iceberg in amusing chatter. I highly suggest getting a copy.

So there were a few little things in this issue that annoyed me, but over all it was very well done. I liked Striker's conference and the "kitty" scene posted above. I also enjoyed Nico and Hazmat snarking at each other and then becoming friendly right after. The only annoyances I had were Molly being written as kind of stupid and the part where Karolina is talking to Julie and is all like, "Yeah, I was engaged, but stuff happened and I'm single now". That kind of made me rage since it seemed like she was being really disrespectful of Xavin, but over on another board Gage said that the next issue would show that Karolina is still hurting, so I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt until the next issue comes out.

But as for my favorite part of all...Yay, Old Lace is back! And she's made friends with Devil Dinosaur and Moon Boy! Yay! They better actually bring her back and not do one of those, "Oh, look, she's happy with her new dinosaur friends, so we should just leave her here" things. -_-

Kind of stupid? She wet herself.

Nico and Hazmat snarking at each other and then becoming friendly immediately after is a direct rip off of a scene that BKV wrote in Runaways vol. 2 between Nico and Gert. So I didn't really enjoy it very much.

I'm glad Old Lace is back but I think the way they found her was kinda dumb. "I cast a spell and it told me very specifically and conveniently to find this guy and his amulet because it's connected to wherever Old Lace is"
That's not a very good use of the Staff of One

See, I didn't see it as a rip off, but as a reference/homage to the Gert and Nico scene. It was pretty obviously set up as a similar scene and they even shook hands in the end like in the original.

As for the Staff of One thing, quite frankly I think that BKV was the only one that ever came up with good/clever spells/uses for it. Everyone else who has written Runaways has had really mundane spells, or they just do like they did in this issue and have Nico be like, "I cast a spell off panel that let me blah, blah, blah" so they don't even have to show what she said.

But honestly, I don't care HOW they found Old Lace, I'm just glad she is back. I've been waiting for her (and Gert) to come back ever since the last Runaways issue where they showed both of them and then did nothing with it since the series ended. I'm still upset about that one.

The original scene between Gert and Nico worked so well because they actually had a valid reason to be angry at each other, to argue, and then sudden forgiveness and bff-ness made sense because they had a prior friendship. The BKV scene was just so much better written.

The "Please let this work" and "Reveal" spells in this issue were particularly bad. I know that by their very nature Nico's magic is suppose to work to convenience the plot, but they just felt really contrived in this issue. And badly worded.

I kinda wish that Old Lace (and Gert) had come back in an actual Runaways comic, I don't even blame Kathryn Immonen, Marvel canceled the book while she was mid-story.
