("Special Edition" was a 64-page no-ads format for the princely sum of $1.50, before Marvel gave them their own Annuals)
The year was 1985. I'd gone over to a friend's house for a slumber party, and he had video games and comics. (Okay, I had read the occasional comic book before, but they were always single issues found at garage sales and used book stores, and never something I followed.) I was starstruck by Art Adams' wrap-around cover (Adams has spoiled me for all other artists ever. Jim Lee? Todd McFarlane? Pshht, mere copycats!):

The level of detail blew me away...and the characters, who I'd never met before, impressed me with their humanity and spirit (under the pen of Claremont) in the face of adversity and the unknown. You had to feel for poor Doug when he faced off against Asgard's answer to Popeye, Bluto, and Olive Oyl:

Plus, it featured the star-cross'd lovers Hrimhari & Rahne:

How can you not love this?
After this, I had to seek out the monthly title, and the back issues, which introduced me to Bill Seinkiewicz, who blew my mind yet again. It was all downhill from there.
