As Dick finds out what happened to Raymond/Saiko years before

Odd that Dick doesn't seem to be using his escrima sticks, they'd be useful when fighting someone with hand blades, no?
But anyway....

The raw rat diet is looking pretty good by comparison.
The Court of Owls are indeed bastards of the first water! (I may have my little quirks, but that's too extreme for me thanks)

Date: 2012-03-17 12:28 am (UTC)DC is doubling down on some tired old tropes and it's bugging me.

Date: 2012-03-17 01:01 am (UTC)It's stupid and contrived. Dick didn't do anything! If this guy hates what these people did to him he should be going after them and see Dick as mere obstacle.

Date: 2012-03-17 10:04 am (UTC)My own problems with it are A) that it remains too much of a retcon of Dick's origin, the happy family and exciting circus background are now at least partially... sullied by this and B) Dick's first story arc in the DCnU is only tangentially about HIM, this doesn't feel like a defining Nightwing story, which would show us who he was in the DCnU, but a sodding lead-in to a Batman crossover. (And whilst I like the design of the Talons, the "Court of Owls" doesn't really engage me)

Date: 2012-03-17 12:52 am (UTC)I just don't like the "secret connections" that the circus has because it just feels hokey and cheap storytelling. That trick can be used as a wow factor, but I think it's not being used well as it could have been.
I am underwhelmed by this book so far and this was one of the books I really was looking forward to at the reboot.

Circuses don't do this.

Date: 2012-03-17 12:35 pm (UTC)Not that there seems to be any other type of rich person club in DC these days.
I'm not a Conservative or a Republican or anything, but really there are enough rich wealthy people in the DCU for there to be some kind of joint venture between them to use their money and influence to save the world beyond their superheroics, right?
Like a team up between Michael Holt, Bruce Wayne, Karen Starr, Kord Industries etc. to save the world via something along the same likes as Batman Inc. but being more towards providing humanitarian aid in disasters and crisises beyond crimefighting and immediate relief in the aftermath.
Like maybe it'd be straying too far from reality to have them come up with an AIDS vaccine with their joint money or something, but it'd make a change from anonymous groups of wealthy people secretly being out to mess with the prols.

Date: 2012-03-17 01:35 pm (UTC)The one thing he CAN obsess over is that it was never meant to be him the Court took, it should have been someone else, namely Dick Grayson, the golden boy of the circus who when tragedy struck him was taken in by a millionaire.
I imagine the Owls would have told him that he was never the first choice to torment him further, that he was always second best to Dick Grayson, the one they REALLY wanted.
It's not an original motivation, but I don't think it's being portrayed that badly.
