Actually the military got hold of them and played Mad Scientist until the end of ish #4 when Gates reappeared in this condition, and #5 when they staged a jailbreak to get Yera back.

#5's worth picking up for the sight of Gates kicking massive military ass, and J'onn J'onzz, little ray of sunshine that he always is, telling the team that time travel's a one-way trip and they're all going to die here. Yeah, you have a nice day too, J'onn.
