Preview of Wonder Woman #7

I just stumbled across this preview while browsing ComicVine and I just wanted to say how much I love Cliff Chiang's art!

Like in this bottom panel, Diana looks like she has some real muscle around her midsection. I imagine she has killer six-pack abs under that costume! And this might just be an effect of the perspective, but she appears to be quite broad-shouldered (which I also love!). Her legs look quite toned and her arms actually look muscular as well. All in all one of my favorite representations of Diana ever!

The other characters also look great (see "reasonably proportioned"). I especially like Eros' design since a blond man with the golden pistols and a fabulous scarf is certainly an interesting take on a figure typically portrayed as a chubby angel wielding a bow and arrow.

Also like the caduceus Hermes is holding and using as a light source. Mundane utility is always awesome to me. :D

For the rest of the preview, go here www.comicvine.com/news/exclusive-preview-wonder-woman-7/144429/

PS If anyone else could share or direct me to their personal favorite depictions of Diana? Or even any other comic characters? I would be most appreciative.

It's very funny that people confuse Eros/Cupid with the fat putti or amorino cupids that people also call cherubs. They're not the same the latter are just love sprites/a whole other watering down of cherubim. It's very funny how all of that has gotten sort of tied up and confused.

Eros was pretty much a slender full grown youth to the Greeks and their depictions of them, late teens to early twenties. As Cupid he married Psyche and was old enough to have children with her. I'd probably blame the Romans they seemed to depict him anywhere from prepubescent to up to the Greek age depictions but they're the ones that made him the chubby boy with the bow and arrows.

I like that they're depicting Eros as I'm going to imply here the child of Hephaestus the lame smith god (who is a jewelry smith now?!) and Aphrodite's cuckolded husband instead of the Roman tradition of Eros being the son of her and Ares. It's really nice to have a great contrast like that. Unhappy marriage but the result from that was Eros, a powerful god in himself. Though the whole Love + War = Eros is also nice too.

I love Greco-Roman mythology!

Don't get me started on the putti issue... Cherubim were monstrous three-faced beings that burned eyes by their very presence. If they were really a bunch of fat babies, they wouldn't greet humans with "Be not afraid," they'd be greeting them with "Stop laughing!"

Hercules, the Legendary Journey's kept the "beautiful young man" thing for Eros (albeit they kept the bow and arrow.

And IIRC Aphordite does berate him at one point for his immaturity, suggesting that the Romans had got it right when they depicted him as a child.

They did sort of reference the chubby Cupid by introducing his son (with Psyche), Bliss

Talk about a generalisation. Because it was OBVIOUSLY her sitting back and doing nothing that destroyed Hera's scrying pool last issue.

My feeling is that killing a god is, if not impossible, then at least REALLY hard to do, so it's more likely to just keep Zola protected and wait it out until the baby can be born.

Well, they're not going to get credit for something they didn't put in the book. And the gods are pretty dumb as well considering the #1 cheese got around a lot by impregnating women that which results in their lives being put in danger.

Screw it. This is freaking garbage. It's like they wanted Wonder Woman to be so male centered that they get rid of all the Amazons, made her only female friend Zola a damsel, her origin changed to have a father (who's an a**hole), her mother being a selfish sex loving.... thing (Seriously, she couldn't stop talking about how wonderful the sex was to her daughter who just found the truth), her half sister being a murderous monster and her No. 1 enemy is the GODDESS OF WOMEN. It's like the pitch they made to DC was more of an apology for depicting strong women and came to the conclusion that Wonder Woman character doesn't work unless she has a more male dependent background and her enemies are mostly all women. THAT is why I hate this new Wonder Woman so much.

Her enemies have always been mostly women. The only big male foes who have been fairly consistent over the years are Doctor Psycho and Ares. That's nothing new. Also, Hera? She might well be the Goddess of Women, but at the same time, the legends depict her as a pretty spiteful and nasty and jealous goddess. Again, nothing new. Strife being Diana's half-sister is basically a parallel along the same lines as the old villainess Devastation, who was meant to be created in the same manner as Diana, or even better, Simone put together a totally murderous monster whose base form WAS Diana, as I recall.

I don't think readers need to be told that the gods are too powerful for Wonder Woman to directly fight. I think readers can infer that from the fact that they're called "gods."

At least Batman hasn't been turned into a bastard child thanks to his mother who was just in it for the sex. Ugh, and Hippolyta fell for the number one trick in the book to. How touching.

Well hey, thanks for throwing around wonderful terms like bastard child. You throw the term about like there's something wrong with being one. Could you try being more offensive?

As for the sex - so what? Is Hippolyta loving her daughter any less even though she was born of a sexual encounter? Wonder Woman as a concept and a whole has been so annoyingly asexual since Marston died that it's just gotten dull, and any attempts at actually injecting some relationships and the like have been weirdly sabotaged by successive creative teams, to the point where I was pretty disgusted by how Simone opted to resolve the Nemesis problem.

"You throw the term about like there's something wrong with being one."

Well, wouldn't being a bastard mean that one of your parents abandoned you and/or conceived you with no intention of sticking around for you or your mother? I would say that is wrong and unfortunate no matter how you look at it. A person isn't wrong for being a bastard, there's just some wrong things that come with it, and Wonder Woman being turned into a bastard not only doesn't make her a better character, but it demeans her parents as well.

Remember Superman Returns? Bryan Singer's idea on reintroducing this family friendly super hero was to bring him back to the world where he knocked up Lois, left the planet, and in the end leaves his kid to her care.

Oh, one other thing. What's wrong with being asexual?

As someone whose father did promptly run off, I still take offense because it seems like you're laying the blame at Diana's feet and at the feet of the child. I might be reading it wrong or getting the wrong tone, but I still think it's a horrid term to use, and you're using it to find fault with a comic, of all things.

Yes, it is unfortunate that my father (although we do not regard him as such) ran off, but why brand the child with something unsavoury because of his inability to commit? Stop using the term.

As for being asexual, it's just annoying. DC completely eradicated that aspect of the character in the years after Marston dying, and now it's just annoying to see a lot of people just thing she shouldn't have some kind of partner. I mean, every time the idea is remotely experimented with, it's the fanbase who largely kick up a fuss and scream. Again, it was the response to Nemesis that largely gave us Simone's ridiculous and awful resolution to the relationship, that didn't make Diana endearing at all. It's another thing along the same lines as characters never being allowed to progress in general.

Please understand that I sympathize with your situation immensely and do not intend to label you as a lesser person for it. But when it comes to this Wonder Woman, I'm not calling her a bastard like most people do when it has nothing to do with the not having a parent. My entire point of calling her a bastard was more about how her new origin affected hippolyta as a character. I loved how she was a loving and cherishing woman who earned the respect of all her fellow amazon sisters. I especially loved how Simone treated the birth of Diana as not just Hippolyta's daughter, but as the daughter to every Amazon on the island. Diana was joy incarnate.

But now, Diana is just the result of Zeus screwing around with Hippolyta for no other reason besides Hippolyta's craving for godly ****. I mean, Diana asks for the truth regarding her origin, and all Hoppolyta talks about for two whole pages is the awesome sex that she had with Zeus in huge detail. Why should all of that be relevant? It's only after telling Diana her sex life that she finally gets to the part where she actually cares about Diana. That left me feeling very disappointed in a character I loved as much as Wonder Woman in their previous stories.

I miss the optimistic Diana who was kind, loving and fair. This Diana comes off as irritated, rash, arrogant, rude and very violent.

And I don't think that Diana not having a partner is what's at stake here, I just don't think she's found the right person yet. After all, she wrote a book a while ago and stated at the signing that she didn't any boyfriends or girlfriends. She didn't say she wasn't interested in having any. And I also like Diana not having a companion because when she fights, she's really fighting for everyone. Plus, she's got hundreds of mothers. That's worth something. :)

a blond man with the golden pistols and a fabulous scarf is certainly an interesting take on a figure typically portrayed as a chubby angel wielding a bow and arrow.

Dunno if they did this knowingly, but he reminds me of Donnie Rhodes Jr., the signature-character son of Aphrodite from White Wolf Games' Scion (for those of you who don't already know it, it's basically the American Gods/Percy Jackson Storytelling game).

Don't presume to know why I read anything... I love wonder woman in this book. She is kick ass, fierce, has this strong noble dignity, but also has this unique sense of humor. And she is intelligent, the plan she came up with just to distract and then blind her was like a game of chess. brilliant. So yeah, I like her supporting characters, but I love wonder woman

I think the idea is that the Gods, with the power that they have, can basically just do whatever the hell they want, so it's not like Diana could really stop her. Besides, it was really only for half-an-issue at most, and it seemed to me that she genuinely did want to befriend Diana, but, being who she was, she just couldn't help but spread discord and suggest terrible things.

I really like this depiction of Wonder Woman too. I love when female heroes are allowed to look strong.

For similar reasons, I was happy with the way Peege was drawn in the most recent JSA run. She had a lot of muscle; she looked strong and kind of sexy at the same time. That's one thing I'm missing in the new WF previews --Peege doesn't seem to have that power build anymore.
