It's the first day of spring, and you know what that means....

...according to current DC lore, it's the birthday of Dick Grayson! ("Robin" being his mothers pet name for him, since he arrived on the first day of Spring.... That makes more sense when you're American, as your robins are associated with Spring, whereas in Europe they're associated with Christmas and winter.

So with that recommendation... here is a summation of Dick's pre-Crisis origin as shown in the first attempt to summarise a complete history of Batman and his cast - "The Untold Legend of the Batman" from 1980, in this case issue 2 (Five pages from a 21 page story)

The plot of "The Untold Legend..." is that someone who seems to know all of Batman's secrets is trying to destroy him and everything that has meaning for him... Dick has come home from college to help out... and on the way back from the latest event, Dick ponders his past...

Wait a minute... backtrack there... a tall redhead called Wally making Dick's life hell? Oh this HAS to be worked into a Titans/YJ fic at some point!

	Huh. Nothing on his friendship with the Titans. Which is important. Dick's friendship with the Titans (both original and The New) are an important aspect why Dick will never be totally like Bruce. 	Two reasons for that I'd say 1) This is Batman's story, supplemented with the stories from supporting cast members like Alfred and Dick. Dick's involvement with the Titans had no real bearing on Batman, it's part of Dick's story, not Bruce's. 2) When this came out the New Teen Titans had only just formed, so not really an issue. Jim Aparo had many strengths; effortless seeming anatomy, a draughtsman-like approach to backgrounds and surroundings, and even an eye for fashion, as well as a bold clean linework that is instantly recognisable.... However, his kids tended to look a little older than they should, with a tendency towards grumpiness (But Dick makes it looks cute).

To be fair though, Dick DID sort of look like a barrel-chested midget wrestler rather than a 10-12 year old, for the entirety of the Golden Age

	This is true. He's moving in the right direction here--and I love the art in general. I especially like that panel of Bruce saying he's the Batman with his swirly cape and Dracula pose.
