Well just thought to share this as some people were discussing some marriage questions in BIRDS OF PREY #7. :)

Wasn't Black Canary's husband named Larry? Although I guess that was this Black Canary's dad. Or are both Black Canaries the same person now?

Wee bit confused.

Technically that would still make him the husband of Black Canaray, just not THIS Black Canary.

Old school Black Canary's husband was Larry. In the DCnU, odds are Larry still exists and so does Dinah's mom, but I imagine the former was still a detective and the latter wasn't a superhero/vigilante, given how intent DC were on pushing Johns/Lee/Morrison's stories as being the first appearances of major superheroes and Superman.

No, I got that, but if Dinah's dad was Larry Lance, then it's a little weird that her husband has the same last name. (Unless they changed Dinah's maiden name or had her husband take her last name, which would be kind of nice.)

Huh. Good point. I would like it if Dinah's husband took her name, though. That'd be a nice twist.

Yeah, I'm right up there with you on the confusion, but considering they changed her husband's name to "Kurt LANCE," chances are we're probably dealing with an amalgamation of the two Black Canaries.

It wouldn't make sense to make her the daughter of Dinah Drake and Larry Lance and then have her marry a guy with the same last name as her dad, unless he decided to take *HER* last name instead of his (which would actually be cool).

THE TALON and The Court of Owls!• A secret is revealed about Black Canary's husband…Kurt Lance?!

He's a Talon. Come on, it became that obvious in light of the recent issue as well as the revelations in Batman and Nighting.

He's probably this specific Talon. Talk about an akward conversation. "Wait..HONEY!?"
"..Sweety, why did you stab me in the shoulder"
"...Er..."

If he was slicing, yes it's odd, but if he was gouging (and Talon strength might be enough to make a digging action work) it might make sense.

It looks like he reversed grip and just punched Katana instead of slicing her.

They're all designed differently. There's consistent elements between all of them, but Capullo has put out the designs for each one. So they're all different - I mean, this guy looks more slender and agile than the bulkier one Batman's been plagued by as of late. There's a few female ones in the ranks too.

I do, however, think that consistency in/and nature of the design is intentional, though. The name alone - Court of Owls - is almost an old-fashioned, Edgar Allen Poe thing.

The costumes change, but the general aesthetics are the same, yes. (And they look more like the post-Crisis Owlmen than Nite Owl.)

I've suspected since the first time we saw a Talon that they may be planning to go there.

That would be an easier way to bring a consistent Owlman foe into the proceedings for Batman than the whole AU deal. He still serves the same purpose, and really, whichever Talon we picked - since they apparently have very similar origins - they still serve as a great antithesis and opposite number to Batman and his origin.

I suspect they may replace the whole concept of Owlman with the 'Court'. The Owlman cowl changed many hands before DCNu, in this way whenever they want a new Owlman, they send in a new talon.

I don't know.. I get the feeling that due to the nature of the Court of Owls, Snyder will basically have Batman dismantle them over the course of his story. After all, would Batman really leave such a huge threat - who knows his every secret - in Gotham? So I think after Night of the Owls is over, we'll probably have just one Talon left. And they'll become Owlman after Batman destroys the Court.

If the court is big enough, dismantling them could take years.

From: [personal profile] mrstatham
True, but that would make for a genuinely difficult ongoing story, and given people are getting bored with it already, in some quarters, I don't think Snyder's going to drag it out.

It doesn't have to be a complete ongoing. They could take some heavy losses from the Bat-crew and go into hiding for a while.

From: [personal profile] mrstatham
Very true. I'm just thinking that they feel like something along the lines of Doctor Hurt or whatever - once Batman's cottoned on to them, I don't see why he wouldn't just hunt them down without mercy, is all. It would be nice for them to be an ongoing threat, but it would involve massively changing the nature of the Court for a follow-up story, given you can't do the 'hidden society of Gotham aristocrats' thing again once they're exposed.

I don't know.. On the one hand, there are ways to set up the Court in general as a real ongoing threat. On the other, the way the Court of Owls rather vilely gets rid of their Talons when they're considered failures could mean that's a method of setting up an 'Owlman'. So I can see it going a number of ways.

That was pre-DCNu, no one liked that relationship anyway since Ollie was a philandering ass and the whole thing about her daughter but for some reason Dinah never broke his legs.

The sad thing was that Ollie/Dinah could've actually really, really worked. If, you know, they stuck to the dynamic of Ollie actually trying to be a better person, like he was in Kevin Smith's run, whereas Winnick seemed overjoyed to just throw him headfirst into making the same old mistakes.

Although suggesting that a Kevin Smith take was actually good makes my head hurt.

I thought "Kurt Lance" sounded more like a pro wrestler name.

I don't even watch wrestling, so I have no idea why this entered my mind at all.

I think that would be kind of oddly hilarious, though.

They are intent on presenting this generation of heroes as the first one; The JLA is the first superhero team and we saw their origin in Johns/Lee's story. Superman is the first public superhero, it seems, and Batman was probably operating a little beforehand.

So Dinah's mother probably still existed, but not as Black Canary I.

I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing, since it avoids that whole mother's-mind-in-daughter's-body mess from her Earth-1 origin.

Yup. Post-Crisis, they cleaned up Black Canary's history so that her mother was still the first and a member of the JSA, and her daughter took over the schtick.

So maybe in the 'new' U Dinah is the first Black Canary again, and married a private eye named Kurt Lance? Now I'm curious as to what happened to him. (Guess we'll only see the mother/daughter legacy thing play out in Silk Spectre, though I'm also hoping for some backstory regarding Bette and Kathy Kane since the former is still alive in Batwoman.)
