X of the Underground

As a general rule it sucks to be female in Military Comics. You show up, and, in three to five pages, you will die or betray everything you every believed in all for a hot guy you will never see again. At best you get out of there alive to never been seen again.

If you have your own title though, things turn out alright for you. For example see X of the Underground, a female member of the European underground resistance.

All stories and most art by Vernon Henkel (The Space Legion, Marvel titles during the early 1950s, mostly stuck to artwork after the 1940s).

So maybe things aren't so good since she earns herself a stalker who could blow her cover at anytime. Hmm.

The Crossdressing for Justice tag is listed in-joke: crossdressing for justice

What's kind of hilarious about the "crossdressing for justice" thing is that, except for maybe tucking her hair up, she doesn't seem to be butching her appearance up at all; she just puts on a Nazi uniform and they're all, yep, you're an SS dude, dude.

Bob Gray is totally Holly Martins from the Third Man. He just wanders around being super-American and trying to act heroic but screwing things up for everyone else.

Also, I like that X's response to unwanted-but-sexy kisses is to beat the offender unconscious with the butt of her gun. More Golden Age heroines should do that.
