Zeb Wells is really an underrated writer, and pretty much entirely due to him, Avenging Spider-Man's been a pretty fun book so far. Issue #5 was particularly good.

An antiquarian in Brooklyn has dug up one of the comics Steve drew when he was in art school, back before World War II, and reproductions of the pages ran in the Daily Bugle. Most of the Avengers are pretty amused, but Spider-Man's particularly interested, because the way he sees it, it's something he has in common with Cap.

They were both pretty geeky kids, but the way Cap sees it, the old comic pages are kid stuff. He compares it to playing with your first chemistry set, and Peter's response is that, well, he does still do that from time to time.

They go off and have a fairly routine mission fighting the Serpent Society, which has not been having a good year so far, and when they get back:

Yeah, this was quite possibly one of the best Spider-Man stories in a long, LONG time.

But an S_D post about this issue without posting the panel with Peter and Steve close together and Dat Spider Ass at the forefront? I am disappoint.

I cannot believe I forgot to pick this up. I must remedy to that. *Flies away*
Or I'll fly away when daylight comes back. Yes, that's a good idea.

I remember reading previews of Avenging Spider-Man, thought them funny, and then my goldfish memory struck again.

Wait, the Avengers know SPidey's face now... not going to question how they forgot? Or how Jarvis missed his chance with May? I know the "feeble minded spell" was broken when Pete went on that air with his powers but not when he unmask to the FF, but they would remember not being able to remember... Or did they all address that already?

Strange and Tony helped him with the "spell" so I would imagine everyone in the Avengers knew that he caused them to forget.

I haven't for years- I know it's a tiny bit quicker than pulling out a phone, but I can't be bothered, and the few people that I know who are my own age (early-mid twenties) and do wear a watch do so for the fashion accessory aspect.

Looking a little Andrew Garfield there, Spidey. Has he looked this way for the other issues?

On another note, I did a double take when I saw the dedication at the end of the last scan. Then I wibbled inside. The name initially drew me off, but now I'm thinking that I should pick up an issue.

Funny this comes up, I was going through some old Captain America issues for my forthcoming Serpent Society post, and Steve making a living as a comic artist was an ongoing subplot. Nice to see it addressed here.

Ahhhh, I read this on tumblr the other day. A classic Spider-man story.

Awww, but the best panel, imo, was when Spidey is at the door and says that he does still play with his old chemistry set, and he doesn't know why he lied about it. I felt his pain, it sucks when you still do 'childish' things and you feel like you have to lie about it. But then he's honest because he doesn't know why he'd be ashamed and ahsgshshgs.

"See if I could create a superhero that isn't an insensitive idiot"

So you don't want to be published by DC or Marvel, then?

While I know it's been canon since the sixties that, in the Marvel Universe, Marvel publishes officially sanctioned books about real superheros, I wonder why superhero comic books would be popular in a world where the only thing those comics can do is print the same type of stories that probably show up in the newspapers every day.

I'd think that in a world where superheros exist, the most popular comic books would be things like teen humor and romance, the most popular thing that Marvel ever published would be Patsy Walker from the 40s through the 60s, Archie Andrews there is like Superman is here, and Harvey Comics is still a major part of the industry.

Comic books like this would perhaps be comparable to the hideously popular "celebrity" magazines that litter the shelves of newsagents, with all the intrinsic appeal of... well, most of the comparisons I could make seem pretty bad inside my own head so I won't risk writing any of them down at this time of night, so let's stick with "doggy do".
